Perhaps it is no surprise that the route for our loved CityCats and the stage for Riverfire is your favourite natural icon. The Brisbane River scooped the pool, getting 28% of the votes as our city’s favourite natural icon.
Nature lovers were split between the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and Moreton Bay, each of these beauties scoring 17% of the votes.
It wasn’t jacaranda season when we ran the poll but these trees got 11% of the votes. We wonder if we ran the poll during flowering season if the votes might have been higher. The purple flowers really are breathtaking and more beautiful for being short-lived.
The crabs and baby fish might like them but ourbrisbane.com voters don’t give mangroves the thumbs up. They only got 2% of the votes. Yes, yes, they can be smelly, mosquito-infested and muddy so they haven’t won this beauty contest. But they are essential for the health of our river and aquatic life. The river might not have scored so well as a loved natural icon if it weren’t for the maligned mangroves.
