I like to think I’m a fairly easygoing person, happy to go with the flow and not overly fussed with the “niceties” of restaurant etiquette. But I have to admit I was more than a little shocked by the way we were treated at Highsocietea when I attended a Bridal Shower there a week or so ago.
Whenever you go somewhere in a large group, as a Bridal Shower is bound to be, you expect there to be a few hiccups. A wrong order her, a miscalculated invoice there, you accept that they’re going to happen. What you don’t expect, however, is to be treated by the management as if all the mistakes by their staff were YOUR fault, and then to be harassed by the owner as you’re leaving because you chose to complain about said service.
The wait staff didn’t seem capable of getting our drink orders right, bring the wrong drinks out to at least a quarter of us. Then, at the end when the bill arrived we found we’d been billed not only for the drinks we’d ordered, but also for the ones incorrectly brought to us. We didn’t get too upset about it, expecting that if we explained the error it would be taken care of, but to our surprise and horror, the owner declared that because the drinks were brought to the table, she was charging us for them whether we’d ordered them or not!
After that we were actually followed into the parking lot by the owner who was upset that the Chief Bridesmaid wrote a comment in the comment book that said we were unhappy with the service we were given! Of all of the unprofessional, completely immature things to do, that definitely tops my list! It was bad enough that what should have been a lovely afternoon celebrating the upcoming wedding of a close friend had been shadowed by bad service, but for the owner then to harass the bride-to-be in the parking lot is just inexcusable!
I can say with all certainty, I won’t be going to Highsocietea again.
A few weeks ago, I had the misfortune of stepping into High Societea. It was the worst experience I believe i have ever had at a restauant. The service was terrible, the food was worse and the prices unbelieveable. This is one place that i hope the economic downturn forces to close.
I would like to thank the people who have already commented on this venue - I was looking for a place to host a hightea as part of my hens night and will certainly NOT be booking here. It's great to see fellow Brisbane-ites leaving feedback so the rest of us don't waste our money!
A group of us went to celebreate a friends birthday with a high tea at High Societea in Clayfield.
The food and atmosphere was good when we got there but the owner was extremely rude. 6 of our group had checked out prices on the internet and the Chocolate Indulgance package was advertised at $30 with tea/coffee as extra. When we got the bill the owner told us all packages were $45 and then charged the remaining three members of our group $30 for their savoury selection.
She denied the website said $30 and said she would have to check it. We paid our money and left.
The owner then proceeded to come out to our car while we were ready to leave, blocking the door and telling us that she had undercharged the 3 savoury selections that were also $45 and not $30. These three ladies had left and the owner would not leave the car until one of us paid for someone else's mistake! Totally disgusting.
Also, all of us could not misread the information on the High Societea website. When I got home, I checked the site and the information had been changed. Totally evident by the 'last modified time stamp on the botth of the page that read 06 June 2009'!!!
This woman couldn't even admit to a mistake and treated her customers very badly.
I would NOT recommend this experience and definately would NOT go back to this low class establishment! No-one else in our party would either.
So sad to see that other people had the same experience as we did. Why is this place always full when everybody dislikes this place? Come on Brisbane vote with your feet!!! Don't go there!!

We were very disappointed with the service, when we attend a friends Bridal Shower at this establishment recently.
Firstly, it took nearly an hour to receive any sort of refreshment (of a 2 hour sitting). The staff were not clear when explaining the service and there was some confusion around the gluten-free menu that was pre-arranged. As the staff put it, their liquor license does not cover the gluten-free menu, so those people could not have the Pims drink that came with the regular package, but the staff brought out the extra Pims drinks for the group anyway and then had the hide at the end of the sitting to charge us for those drinks, even though they had told us we weren't allowed to have them.
While we were still finishing up and trying to finalise the bill, we were told quite rudely to leave as the sitting was over, although it was the last sitting of the day and no-one else was coming in.
When we questioned the manager regarding the extra charges on the bill and to advise that we weren't fully happy with the service we had received, the Manager got quite defensive and argued with us.
When the booking was arranged we were not advised that gluten-free was extra or the difference in the menu, we were also told we would have a particular area of the establishment all to our party, and this was not the case.
When we left the establishment we wrote a genuine comment, in the comments book, about being unhappy at the service we had received, and that the bride-to-be was close to tears, which she was. The Manager then followed us into the carpark and start another argument with us. The Manager also told us that our comment was disgusting.
If you cannot take good and bad feedback from customers and try to make the service better, don't work in Hospitality.
