In 1886, the Story Bridge Hotel was born. Known originally as the Kangaroo Point Hotel it underwent a name change in 1940 to The Story Bridge Hotel to coincide with the actual opening of The Story Bridge.
In 1967, the Deery Family, headed by Mr. Barrie Deery, purchased the Hotel, which at that time, catered for an extensive industrial workforce.
By the 1970's the industrial ability of the area was declining after it was felt that Kangaroo Point was more desirable as a residential location and in need of a "village pub" or “ a local” for those deciding to reside in the area.
In 1978 the Deery family acquired a photograph of the hotel taken in 1912 which depicted the building as it looks today. The photo inspired Barrie to plan and proceed with the renovation of the Story Bridge Hotel.
The Annexe at the back of the hotel – a converted WWII bomb shelter - established itself as one of the most original and well-known bars in town. Non-descript as it seemed, it went off like a "bomb" with huge successes spawning a true live entertainment scene in Brisbane, noted mostly for the originality, range and quality of the acts that performed.
The hotel became home to some of Australia’s greatest special events: The Australia Day Cockroach Races and The National Festival of Beers. Both these events which have become National institutions have greatly contributed to the successful image of the Hotel, helping to keep it on the map and maintaining its status as a "happening place" - a living icon of Brisbane.
In 2003 The Bomb Shelter was finally retired and plans were made for yet another extensive renovation to bring the hotel into the 21st century.
In October 2003, The Story Bridge Hotel reopened with a fresh, new image.
Three dining areas had been created, an exciting and contemporary bar installed and an ‘urban beer garden’, “The Outback Bar & Grill” added to the hotel. Along with a new bottle shop & gaming room the hotel really lives up to it’s trademark - ‘it’s all under the bridge’.
Today at the helm of the hotel are Richard and Jane Deery - Barrie’s son and daughter. The Story Bridge Hotel is one of the last remaining family owned and operated hotels in Brisbane.
A true landmark, ‘the Bridge’ has gained an enviable reputation for its fine food complimented by an extensive and interesting range of high quality flavoursome beers, wines and spirits.
The Hotel frequently plays host to the rich and famous and yet retains a relaxed, friendly ambience which enhances its "village pub" reputation as a place where people from all walks of life can meet, have fun, and enjoy themselves in comfort and safety.
