Well, sometimes the passions and heated topics of debate can come from unlikely places... In the genteel world of sophisticated high teas, it surprised us to see the emotions behind recent comments about where to get a decent high tea in Brisbane.
So, to throw our hanky into the ring of polite conversation about which establishment serves the finest tea in the nicest china, we've put together the Best of Brisbane's high teas. Do the ladies who lunch agree?
Based on the comments from our readers and the wonderful decor, Joseph Alexanders is a winning High Tea location. They serve it everyday, you can add extra savoury treats if you wish or pay a little extra for champagne. The formal, elegant dining room with river views adds to the experience. As Tracey from Everton Park says "I have been many times and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fabulous experience!".
For true tea connoisseurs, Queenies Tea House at Nundah is hard to beat. The menu has pages of tea types to choose from and the staff are very knowledgeable. If you like a certain tea, you can buy some to take home. It's a small dining space, without views or a sense of luxury but we like that the food is made fresh and the old-time music is charming.
The high tea at the Brasserie at the Sir Stamford Hotel gets mixed reviews but the riverfront location really is beautiful. Those in the know recommend visiting during the week as weekends can be very busy. This one probably wins more for ambience and good value than for tea selection and service.
Maybe this one shouldn't be in the Best of Brisbane series because it's not in Brisbane, it's on Tamborine Mountain...but we think that's close enough for a special visit. Thanks to the comments of our readers we've discovered the delights of Tea and Niceties at Eagle Heights. One said "if you want the high tea of your life, try this place" and another "Once you walk through the door you're transported to an era of elegancy that will make you want to stay for some hours" - now that's a good review. Seems we all need to take the trip to Tamborine Mountain for a ‘proper' high tea.
