Where is the mecca of beef in Brisbane? It’s a hotly contested topic, but for those serious about their steak (be it Wagyu, grass-fed, grain-fed, wet aged or dry aged, char-grilled or pan-fried) there’s usually a passionate response. We’d love to hear your views on the best steak joint in Brisbane. And to get the ball rolling, we’ve put together a list of restaurants and pubs that we think deserve status as providers of “supreme steak” eating experiences.
Cha Cha Char Wine Bar & Grill
Looking for the best in Aussie beef? Then this multi-award-winning restaurant is for you. Cha Cha Char, which has been awarded the national Restaurant & Catering Award for Excellence as Australia’s best steak restaurant – four years in a row – serves up modern Australian cuisine, specialising in “cooked to perfection” steaks. (Diners get the opportunity to learn about the age, flavour, feeding regime and paddock address of each beef dish served.) Along with the superb steaks, Cha Cha Char offers a sublime view of the Brisbane River. What more could a meat-eater ask for?
Morrison Hotel
This character-filled pub also happens to be the home to one of Brisbane’s most popular eateries – Fiasco’s. The ambience at the Morrison Hotel is urban-contemporary; the steaks are nothing short of scintillating – according to steak-loving regulars. Our top menu pick is the rib fillet mignon with garden or caesar salad and creamy spud or chips.
Breakfast Creek Hotel
The Breakfast Creek Hotel is a landmark on Brisbane’s pub dining scene. Known by locals as the ‘Brekky Creek', it has been serving up its famous steaks since the 1960s. Part of the ‘Brekky Creek experience’ is to line up and select your own tender, aged fillet from the chilled cabinet and have it char-grilled in an open kitchen in front of you. The steaks, which include 800g rib fillet as well as Wagyu rump, eye fillet and many more options, are cooked to perfection, and served in a no-nonsense manner, with bacon sauce, salad and chips or an Idaho potato.
Brekky Creek’s steaks have earned the hotel awards from American Express, Diners Club, Miettas of Melbourne and Quest Newspapers. Say no more.
Norman Hotel
The heritage-listed Norman Hotel started as a working-class pub, evolved into a biker pub in the early ’80s and, since the addition of a 600-seat steakhouse in 1988, has developed a tongue-in-cheek reputation as “Brisbane’s worst vegetarian restaurant”. The steaks, however, are great – and very affordable. Definitely a pub to enjoy good-value, quality steaks in a relaxed atmosphere.
Pineapple Hotel
The “Piney’s” steakhouse restaurant is another great place to get your steak fix. With a casual and friendly atmosphere, and a menu primarily focussed on steak, this bistro is a favourite with regulars who enjoy the distinctive taste of the renowned 1824 brand of prime aged steaks. The Piney’s proximity to the central CBD as well as the Gabba Stadium, plus the ease of parking, is a bonus for patrons.
Story Bridge Hotel
You’ll find three dining areas at the Story Bridge Hotel, but the pub’s famous steaks can be ordered in each. Deery’s Restaurant is an award-wining à la carte dining room featuring succulent steaks and fresh Queensland produce. The Shelter and Outback Bar & Grill are more casual bistro-style dining areas offering the same superb steaks along with pub favourites like beef and Guinness pies and steak sandwiches.
Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse
Ever wanted to know the difference between Kobe and Wagyu? How is the taste of beef affected by wet ageing vs dry ageing? What is marbling?
Any restaurant that puts these questions to its patrons has got to be serious about its steak. And Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse is very serious about steak (and crabs!). Definitely a place for steak aficionados, with great river views to boot.
Jaz Restaurant and Wine Bar
Fabulous fresh steaks and friendly service are two defining features of Jaz Restaurant and Wine Bar in Toowong. Particularly recommended is the eye fillet on stonegrill. Your fillet is served uncooked at your table on a super-heated volcanic granite stone, allowing you to grill to your heart’s content. Rare, medium, well done? You choose.
Embers Steakhouse
Embers Steakhouse in Milton calls itself “The Steak Specialists” – with good reason. The restaurant specialises in serving certified grass-fed beef, which provides a healthier, leaner and full-flavoured steak. The beef is also aged for a maximum of 35 days to guarantee its tenderness. Cooked to order on the purpose-built char-grill, the steaks are served sizzling hot and deliciously succulent. Gets our tick of approval.
