Brisbane’s best coffees

From Brisbane’s Budget Bites
Coffee cup

Okay, we admit it. There are a whole lot of coffee snobs working in the ourbrisbane.com office. That's why we'll walk to our favourite coffee shops rather than going to closer and more convenient ones.

So when Mei Yen Chua, the lovely author of Brisbane's Budget Bites, offered us some of her coffee shop research, we jumped at the chance.

Here are some of the top coffee picks from Brisbane's Budget Bites plus our personal faves. Feel free to add your own in the comments section below and thanks to all of you who already have.

Coffee in the CBD

Alen's Espresso

Alen's Espresso (city) is a funky coffee shop where the coffees taste like they're made with love and care.

Bar Merlo

Bar Merlo has several city outlets, but it's the George Street one that Budget Bites recommends. If George Street is too far from your office, try one of their other cafes: Queen Street, Market Street or Riverside.

Brother Espresso

On one of the quieter streets in the CBD, it's easy to walk past Brother Espresso without realising it's there. But once you've found it, you're likely to be hooked by the great coffee, good food and communal tables for large groups.

Naked Coffee

The friendly baristas at Naked Coffee use a modified filter to extract directly into the cup and make their ‘naked' coffee. The coffee's strong and smooth and will have you coming back to the Elizabeth Arcade for more.

Chocolate Soldier

The combo of hand-made chocolates and coffee - what could be better? Chocolate Soldier has slick surroundings and fast service too.

Sage on Ann

Always bustling, Sage makes quality coffee. Bet you can't resist the freshly made doughnuts either!

Top coffee shops in the suburbs

Annerley

Dudley Street Espresso on Ipswich Road.

Bowen Hills

Di Bella Coffee at the roasting house in Bowen Hills.

Fortitude Valley

Coaldrake's Espresso Bar within the Emporium complex.

Hendra

Jett Espresso

Jindalee

Chase the Rider (86 Currugindi Road)

New Farm

Café Bouquiniste and Urban Grind

South Bank

Espresso Garage

Spring Hill

Cremosa Espresso Bar and Two Cups

Stafford

Elixir Coffee

Woolloongabba

Brewed Awakening and Brown Dog Café

Laura from Jindalee says:

Chase the Rider in Jindalee is my favourite take away coffee stop. They are very busy so although one has to wait in line it is guaranteed the coffee is always fresh and fantastic. The girls work so hard on their feet to deliver perfect coffee and friendly service. The food is amazing too with home made healthy slices, cakes, sandwiches, tarts and smoothies... for people on the go it is fantastic. Another great attribute is that many ingredients are organic, which indicates the owner cares about serving real food. It is great for kids with outdoor dining, and my daughter loves to buy and help herself to a dinosaur from the lolly jar on the shelf!

The best coffee in Brisbane would have to be UGees in West End, though Pronto on Ann St is a surprising gem in the city.

To HothCoffee from Aspley, the best coffee I've found in your area is Cibo in the Chermside shopping centre, great coffee and for something to go with it the Riccotta canolli's are heaven.

The best coffee in East Brisbane is at e@t cafe in the Morningside Central Shopping Centre on Wynnum Road. They have Segafredo coffee, ultra smooth !!!! It isn't another franchise cafe and the food is inexpensive, with awesome music! ... It's also kid friendly..Do yourself a favour!

To Hothcoffee from Aspley and others, the PEPPER'N'SALT CAFE in the Shopping Centre at Keperra make excellent coffee, have yummy home-made cakes, slices, cheesecakes incl. gluten-free different to the usual stuff and are open Sundays! Little bit of a trek from Chermside, but well worth it - great brekkys too.

With the downturn, I prefer to enjoy an instant cuppa at home. These days, you can find some lovely instant coffee from Woolsworth.

some more to consider...
blackstar at west end (fairtrade and roasted on-site too)
desmond and molly jones at woolloongabba (oh and the food is delicious to boot...vanilla cake, zucchini pie...I'm getting hungry...)
post-dinner coffee at enoteca great too (woolloongabba)
and i can't forget the local, friendly, and unpretentious coffee @ the gabba where you could sit comfortably for hours and not be a bother to anyone. Kylie's making some good coffee here.

Not Copper Lounge in West End unless you like milky nondescript tasteless capuccinos with clinical modern decor

My vote goes to Black Star Coffee in West End. They roast their own beans (and source them too) and are excellent.

Coffee Bob, you can't be serious- Cabinessence? It is rubbish coffee! I gave it the benefit of the doubt five times, hoping each time was just a one off mistake... But, no. It is just poor coffee.

Cafe Orea at 144 Adelaide Street is run by Irene (formerly of Cafe Modena)
We go there daily and have yet to find a better coffee. The food it great too.
Irene has to be one of the best Barista's going and every coffee is just as good as the last.

The best in the West is "The Local Bean" at Kenmore, Moggill Rd...opposite Kenmore State school, especially if Rachel makes your coffee! Sensational!!!! Chase the Rider at Jindalee is NOT the best coffee at all...there's only one girl that works there that can actually make coffee. It's generally bitter, weak coffee.

People! I'm afraid to give this secret away but after reading the fellow comments i have to confirm the best coffee in Brisbane would have to be Caffiene Espresso on Commercial Road, Teneriffe. One cup, and you'll never appreciate coffee from anywhere else :)

Agree with others who give Chase the Rider at Jindalee glowing reports! I absolutely love it. I work from home 3 days a week and my mid morning coffee there is a ritual I can't do without.

Wonderful staff, brilliant coffee and delicious food, can't be beaten!

I am a coffee snob at their best and I think these two haunts of mine need a serious mention. "Ned's" in Yeronga is a fantastic little cafe in the Village Shopping Centre - make a trip out there, its worth it! and also Vince @ Market Street Cafe probably makes the best coffee in all of Brisbane.

I work in the CBD and frequent a local restaurant just across the road. It's called 325 on George, I go there because of the price and great service. (The gilrs working there are also very lovely), of course this isn't the reason i go there so often!.
I very often bring clients for lunch and always leave very happy.

Thanks guys, see you tommorrow

Vue on Merthyr Rd in New Farm has by far the most consistent high quality coffee served in Brisbane. Being part owned by Philip Di Bella (Di Bella Coffee Company) ensures that this is always the case. Friendly Barista's plus quick and efficient service and very competitive prices. They top it all off with the most amazing array of breakfast choices i have seen since moving to Brisbane from Melbourne. I cant talk enough about this place and after a visit neither will you.
