Lively with cheap Asian food options, Sunnybank in Brisbane's south west is considered to be the authentic destination for great Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Hong Kong, Japanese and Malaysian restaurants.
Hidden inside three suburban shopping centres (at the corner of Mains Road and McCullough Street) in busy Sunnybank, dozens of eateries tempt you to pick up the chopsticks and slurp your noodles.
There are no fancy views or sumptuous décor in the Sunnybank dining precinct, but the food is genuine, with a buzzing atmosphere from crowds of locals. It's also a top spot to find yum cha.
The Market Square Complex
This centre has close to a dozen cheap and cheerful places to sit down to eat fantastic Asian food – choose from noodles, Taiwanese dishes, sushi, pearl tea, authentic Asian desserts and much more. We discovered it was a bit of a maze of eating options, sprawling all around the central car park. Options include:
- Pho Hien Vuong Pasteur
- Shanghai Noodle House
- Top Noodle
- Shin Yuan
- Kings Food
- Thai Orchid Square
- Coffee Square
- Sushi Train
Sunny Park Shopping Centre
- Huo Fo Vegetarian
- Sunny Breeze Japanese
- Lok Fok restaurant
Sunnybank Plaza Shopping Centre
This is a large shopping centre, with lots of the usual retail diversions and large stores. But it is also home to one of Brisbane’s biggest and best yum-cha venues. The Landmark is just that – a place well-known for its daily yum-cha and crowded dining room packed with families.
This centre also has the popular Buffet Garden family restaurant.
Parking
There is no shortage of free parking amongst the three centres. It is possible to walk between them, across the large road intersection that is Mains Road and McCullough Street.
Public Transport
It isn’t in a public transport hub but Translink has more information of buses to the area.
Sunnybank is also a great place to find Asian supermarkets, cheap butchers and Asian herbalists.
Or head to Chinatown in the Valley.
