In no particular order, we unwrap our top spots to find Brisbane's best fish and chips:

The Fishmonger's Wife - Lytton Road, East Brisbane

Kevin Rudd PM can't be wrong. He was a regular customer of the store. The quality seafood, rice and fresh salads make it a standout. In 2008 it was named as Australia's best fish and chip shop in an online poll.

The Fish Factory - Lytton Road, Colmslie

Best for takeaway and they can grill, batter or crumb the fish. They have good quality, fresh seafood as well so you can pretty much order any fish you like to enjoy with your chips. They also have a range of frozen seafood for home and their fresh-made salads are a winner.

Doug's Seafood Café - Flinders Parade, Sandgate

On the foreshore at Sandgate and just the place for a sunny day trip. They have a selection of salads, fish prepared in a variety of ways and the classic fish, calamari and chips.

Need to get there early in the evening, especially on weekends. The place goes crazy in summer with big queues out the door into the street. It's worth the wait for a table, or take your food across the road and sit at a picnic table overlooking views of Moreton Bay from Sandgate across to the Redcliffe Peninsula.

Morgans Seafood Restaurant - Bird of Passage Parade, Scarborough

Morgans is another firm favourite, perfect on a day trip from the city. You can buy take away fish and chips, browse the seafood market to take fresh seafood home or enjoy the service and views at the seafood restaurant.

The Pelican's Nest - The Esplanade, Wynnum

The Pelican's Nest is always busy on weekends and just across the road from the giant playground and Wynnum wading pool. There are lots of other places to choose from along The Esplanade, next to parkland and with views of Moreton Bay, such as…

Baywatch Café - The Esplanade, Wynnum

Baywatch Café is close to the marina and Wynnum village. Both Baywatch Café and Pelican's Nest have a few tables to sit at but most people choose to picnic beside the water.

The Codfather - Stafford Road, Stafford

This one has been around forever and makes the best fish and chips (and hamburgers with the lot). Their speciality is battered cod. It's very popular — phone your order through in advance and get a time to pick it up. It's old and hasn't ever been renovated but don't judge this book by its cover.

D'lish Fish - Kedron Brook Road, Wilston

If you want something a bit more upmarket, try the D'lish fish café at Wilston village. Sit down, relax with a bottle of BYO wine and enjoy the food served to your table. The prices are reasonable and it's casual enough to enjoy with the whole family. They have salads and dessert too.

SeaGrill Café - Nudgee Road, Hamilton

A mid-range seafood café – you can get take away but lots of families choose to eat in (highchairs and children's menu available). There's table service, it's BYO and there are good salads too. Plus fresh seafood you can take home. Bookings recommended.

Pink Salmon - Ekibin Road, Tarragindi

Great fresh fish and the calamari is also very good. Beaut chips. There's not much of a view… just a really popular, reasonably priced, good suburban fish and chip shop.

And one that we like partly because of its fabulous name:

A Salt and Battery - Hawken Drive, St Lucia

The salt and pepper calamari is a step up from your regular fish'n'chip fare.

Just a taste…
