Why we love where we live

I guess on a website about Brisbane, you’d expect us to wax lyrical about our city. But why do over 1 million people agree with us and choose to live here? What’s so good about the capital of Queensland and what makes it special? Tell us what you think by leaving a comment below. Here’s what we reckon:

The weather

Winter, what winter? – well, yes there are about 8 weeks of cold nights and early mornings when we don a scarf and fluff up the doona. But, seriously, Brisbane’s winter is nothing but divine. Compared to half of Australia that suffers arctic winds, frosts and icy roads, Brisbane’s temperatures let us thaw out in the winter sun. Plus, ask anyone from countries that see snow and they’ll scoff at our idea of ‘cold’.

Our wonderful climate lets us take advantage of the outdoors – to eat on the decks of our houses, enjoy outside dining at restaurants, watch music in the open air and organise weddings, picnics and other events without too much fear of bad weather disrupting play. See what the weather will be this weekend and what people like to do in Brisbane’s winter.

Friendly locals

Whether it’s our country-town origins or blessings of sunshine, Brisbane is known as a friendly, casual city with people who smile and have a relaxed attitude. For example, Brisbane patrons often thank their bus driver with a wave and call of ‘thanks’ as they exit. Can you imagine seeing such a thing in New York, London or even Sydney? Not me! Visitors standing lost and confused on a city street will be surprised to see a helpful local come to their aid.

On a rush-hour commute, my train came to a standstill for at least 20 minutes (technical fault). There was no antagonism by the occupants, no one cursing and trying to fling open the doors and run down the tracks. Instead, with a shrug and sense of humour they took out their phones and called in late. Those without a phone were able to borrow another’s (what manners!) and normally silent commuters chatted to each other.

Generally happy, relaxed, smiling and friendly – that’s us Brisbanites.

A connected city

Lots of people know each other from networks of school or work contacts. And even if you haven’t lived here long, people are open to helping others find career opportunities. Is it too much to say there is less of a sense of ‘dog eat dog’ in our city?

A fantastic city for families

Even if you left Brisbane for a time to experience living overseas or interstate, when it’s time to raise a family many locals return, like homing pigeons, to Brisbane. Others choose to come here from distant towns and cities to raise their kids. Why? Because Brisbane is a great place to bring up children.

With fantastic parks everywhere, coastal holiday spots only an hour away, excellent schools and heaps of activities especially for children, there’s a vibrant culture of family fun and entertainment. Plus, Brisbane families take the time to socialise together a lot, walk the kids to school and create communities. There’s space and time to play and be childish – for all.

Festival and arts city

Especially at this time of year, Brisbane is the place to be for festivals and fun. We’ve got the special creative treats of the Riverfestival, Brisbane Writers Festival, food festivals, live music at Valley Fiesta, international exhibitions like Picasso at GoMA – Brisbane is a lively centre for the arts, be it performing arts or visual arts. Whether your heart is stirred by drama, design, music, dance, contemporary arts – there’s something for every taste and talent. Brisbane is a city to see the arts or even get involved and make it a part of your life.

Other reasons we love living here:

  • Lots of cycling options – for the experienced and beginner alike
  • Vibrant communities in the villages and suburbs of Brisbane
  • Cool architecture – there’s a unique Queensland feel to our buildings with timber, tin, contemporary or historic styles . Take a look at some photos of Brissie buildings
  • A growing culture of local produce and fine food – as seen at the city’s farmers’ markets and our fabulous restaurants.

Being a Pom who now lives in Brissie, it's got to be the weather. Especially at this time of year - crisp, clear mornings when you can bask in the sun and feel warm within minutes. You can't beat it!

And let's face it - every Aussie you meet loves to talk about the weather too.
