Bougainvillea at South Bank

Q: I’ve got 4 bougainvillea plants which I planted beside my pool about 6 months ago. They are growing well but haven’t flowered. I read somewhere that bougainvillea don’t like fertiliser and thrive on neglect. But what can I do to bring on flowering? Michele, Albion.

A: Bougainvillea. Try a fertilizer high in phosphate and/or potash content. Potassium nitrate would be a good one, also a fertilizer marketed as ‘Phostrogen’.
