Q: How do you get rid of cobblers pegs? I have a part of my garden that has a healthy crop of these weeds. Even if I rip them out they have dropped so many seeds that they all grow right back and I can't break the cycle! Matthew, Ferny Hills.

A: ‘One year’s seeds is seven years weeds’ goes a common horticultural saying.

You are waiting too long before ripping out the Cobblers Pegs weed. You HAVE to get them out BEFORE they set seed. This weed is very easily killed off with a spray of glyphosate. Spray the seedlings when they are very young, say between 50-100mm in height. With all the seed already on the ground they will keep sprouting even after you have sprayed out the first crop of seedlings. Two or three repeated applications of glyphosate, as and when the seedlings sprout, will break the cycle for you. On the other hand you could keep pulling the weed out by hand, but BEFORE they set seed, and this too will break the cycle.
