Red anthurium turning green

Q: Anthurium - red. The red part of my anthurium is slowly turning green. What is its problem, please? Heather – Buderim

A: All anthuriums by the way, are hybrids of the original wild green species, native to tropical American rainforests. Repeated hybridisation over the years has now produced flowers (spathes or bracts) in colours of brilliant red, pink, a mix of green and pink, mauve, purple, varying shapes and sizes, and so on.

When coloured anthuriums age on the plant, some of them turn green with age…others get dull in colour and eventually turn brown and die off…and this depends on the particular hybrid. I feel your problem is just that your flower has gone past its prime. Anthurium flowers usually last from four to six weeks.

Cut your flower out, right down at the base of the stem, and wait for the next flower…which will be a bright red again to start with.
