On 1st December 2009 water restrictions eased in south east Queensland. We are now under what the Queensland Water Commission call 'permanent water conservation measures'.

Once again it is possible to use a sprinkler in the garden or wash your car with mains water. Despite an easing of restrictions, we are encouraged to only use a maximum of 200 litres per person per day.

Rainwater tanks and saving water

Installing and using rainwater tanks on residential properties is encouraged or mandated by some councils. A rainwater tank is recommended as a water source for keeping your garden green, topping up the pool and other outside uses.

Provided your tank water has been collected from rainfall on your roof, you can use it for any purpose you like, at any time. Do not use mains water to fill your tank.

Your rainwater tank can be connected to internal plumbing for use in your toilet and washing machine but must be installed by a licensed plumber.

Visit the Brisbane City Council website for full details about rainwater tanks. Since 30 June 2009, rebates from the Brisbane City Council no longer apply. However, the Federal Government does offer a $500 rebate for installation of a rainwater tank or greywater system.

See our directory for suppliers of tanks and tank equipment. Major hardware stores also sell them.

In the garden

Native plants suitable for subtropical living are a good water-wise choice. Plus there are many exotic species that do well with only a little water, such as succulents. Read how you can keep your garden looking good, even with minimal water use.

Find out more about plants suited to Brisbane's climate and soils and don't forget that the better your soil quality, the less water you'll need to use to keep your garden green.

Re. Medium Level restrictions will be eased from 1st December 2009

Ridiculous, going from one extreme to another! Too much too soon and will be open to abuse.

To allow potentionally six hours watering time every day of the week bar one is ludicrous! Abuse, of sprinklers especially, WILL happen!

Then what, we ALL once again will be forced to suffer the consequences...

Be water wise we're told, well then, let the power that be start, by wising-up!

Keen gardener.

I think the Government is kidding themselves if they think people can keep up with all the changes and regualtions they keep putting forward then changing.

is this for real - how the hell are we meant to keep up with these regulations when they change all the time. I'd like to know how much coin was spent on those current water-wise ads on TV now that they have confused the hell out of everyone (and now useless)

Bloody pollies that don't have a clue!

I agree that there will be those who will think of nothing while they fill their backyard pool and empty it all over the ground on the same day, and it's a big one. I have approached the neighbours, she can't control her 16yrold and she has no say. What I was angry about the hose was running all the time. Well because of the abuse the pool received, it now has holes in it.
yay I say. By the way I still fill my watering cans to water my plants. Don't we have the odds and evens days now?

politicians have a lot to answer for - why does the government pay all these consultants about infrastructure & do nothing. thanks for putting the fear into so many people telling them that the water situation was getting to ARMAGETTON because as usual nothing has been done for the last 20yrs not only for water but also roads / hospitals etc.why do things have to get so bad before anything is done.
isn't that why we pay our taxes, has anyone in the government ever thought of being PRO-ACTIVE instead.
what i also cant understand is when something then needs to be done taxes have to be raised-what has all the bilions been spent on in the last 20yrs when they did NOTHING---------sounds like a total RORT to me

Regarding the 'current water restrictions' information outlined on this page may I comment that it is vague and provides insufficient detail. By way of example, who reading the above would know (or become aware) that cleaning your motor vehicle is captured under the heading 'outdoor cleaning'? The Water Commission link on the page provides the simplest means to gain accurate information on what is permitted/required under the current imposed restrictions.
