Q: Would you please provide a chemical solution to worms eating my tomatoes? Lucy – Grovely

A: The ‘worms’ eating your tomatoes are probably the larvae (grub/maggot like-things) of the Fruit Fly.

There are a few products that will control the problem for you. You should spray your entire plant whilst the fruit are still green, and at intervals and rates of spray as suggested on the bottle of insecticide that you buy. Please remember that for health and safety reasons there is always a ‘with-holding’ period after you spray, in that fruit must not be harvested for consumption within that period. Even if some fruit have already ripened and coloured up, you may still use these sprays…but please observe the ‘with-holding’ period.

You could try Rogor or Dimethoate, Fenthion or Lebaycid. (‘Dimethoate’ is the active ingredient in Rogor, but different companies market this using the two names).
