Pilates has become one of the most popular forms of exercise in the world. Classes in Brisbane have sprung up everywhere – in studios, gyms, universities and local halls. Some classes use special equipment while others require only simple props. But what do you need to know and where can you find the class that’s right for you?

We’ve put together a few things for you to consider.

The benefits of Pilates

Pilates aims to strengthen the 'core' muscles of the body (e.g. abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks) and improve physical coordination and balance. Like most forms of exercise, it requires an ongoing commitment to see these benefits. A session at least once a week for up to three months may be your starting point. More results will be seen when you become stronger and more competent in the practice.

Pilates requires good concentration and breathing techniques and can be great for relieving stress. It is similar to yoga, but focuses on physical exercise and doesn’t have a spiritual component.

Where can you do Pilates?

There are many private Pilates studios in Brisbane. They offer one-on-one instruction or small group instruction, often on specialised equipment. Many clients go to these sorts of classes as a form of rehabilitation from injury. Private classes can be quite expensive, starting at a minimum of $40 an hour.

To reduce cost, some people go to small group classes. These can vary between two clients and groups of about six. Check how many people will be in your class before booking.

Many gyms also offer Pilates classes. These will often be conducted without equipment and classes can be quite sizeable. The positives are that these big group classes are more affordable and Pilates can be taught with just a mat or a fitball. The negatives are the lack of individual attention and support to ensure you do the movements correctly and get the most benefit.

Be careful

When choosing a class, make sure you ask your instructor about their qualifications. Some teachers will have attended a brief weekend course while others have extensive training behind them. There is currently no national standard required for Pilates instructors.

If you attend Pilates to help with back or neck pain, be especially careful about the exercises you do and tell the instructor about any health concerns.
