Over the last few years, pilates has grown in popularity with the people of Brisbane. Classes have sprung up everywhere – in studios, in gyms, universities and local halls. Some classes use special equipment while others require only simple props. But what do you need to know and where can you find the class that’s right for you?
We’ve put together a few things for you to consider.
The benefits of pilates
It is claimed that pilates will give you a flatter stomach, stronger abdominal muscles, a leaner shape and relief from back and neck pain. However, like most forms of exercise, it requires an ongoing commitment to see these benefits. A session at least once a week for up to three months may be your starting point. More results will be seen when you become stronger and more competent in the practise.
Pilates will not help you with weight loss as there isn’t an aerobic element. It is a low-impact form of exercise.
Also, not everyone may enjoy it because pilates requires good concentration and breathing techniques, similar to Yoga. However, unlike yoga, pilates focuses on physical exercises and doesn’t have a spiritual component. It can help to relieve stress though.
Where can you do pilates?
There are more and more private pilates studios opening in Brisbane. They offer one-on-one instruction, often on specialised equipment. Many clients go to these sorts of classes as a form of rehabilitation from injury. However, private classes can be quite expensive, from $40 an hour.
UQ Sport offers Pilates classes including a basic class and variations such as re-energise. The public is welcome and the qualified instructors cater to all skill levels. Classes are held in the Sport & Fitness Centre at the University of Queensland, St Lucia. Call 3365 6612 for more information and for class times and descriptions.
Use our directory to find a pilates school near you. If you run pilates classes, please enter the details of your pilates lessons in our directory so the people of Brisbane can find you. (It’s not hard!)
Some of the groups offering pilates instruction in Brisbane are:
- UQ Sport
- Purely pilates
- Pilates Northside
- Pilates Unlimited
- Pilates on MacGregor
- Ashgrove Pilates Studio
Many gyms also have started to offer pilates classes. These are classes that only require people to use a simple mat on the floor or perhaps a fitball.
Look for any pilates classes on offer in Brisbane’s parks or other venues. Our calendar is regularly updated with pilates events.
Be careful
When choosing a class, make sure you ask your instructor for their qualifications. Some teachers will have attended a brief weekend course while others have extensive training behind them. There is currently no national standard required for pilates instructors.
If you attend pilates to help with back or neck pain, be especially careful about the exercises you do and tell the instructor about any health concerns.
