Rugby Union was developed at Rugby School in England in the early 1800s. These days rugby is played in dozens of countries around the world.

The Super 14 is the largest rugby union club championship in the southern hemisphere, with provincial teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Queensland Rugby Union organises a range of competitions and leagues for everyone who wants to play the game of rugby union. Whether you want to be the next Clinton Schifcofske, or simply want to enjoy the team spirit and fun of the game, take a look at what’s on offer and sign yourself up.

Community rugby

The Australian Rugby Union’s Community Rugby division has diverse responsibilities, from coach and referee training to encouraging participation across all sectors of the community. Played in a friendly social environment, rugby enables people of all ages and ability to participate.

Men’s league and clubs

There are over 20 QRU sanctioned rugby union competitions around Queensland. Brisbane has a thriving local scene with many local clubs. You can get involved, either as a player or enthusiastic supporter. 

Women’s rugby

There are 10 women’s rugby teams in clubs across Brisbane and they are always keen to include new players and club volunteers. Find out about signing on.

School football

Predominantly played in private schools, there are dozens of schools which participate in schools rugby.

Kids

Through non-contact versions of the game, five to sixteen year olds can find out what it’s all about, and receive expert coaching through Telstra TryRugby.

It’s a fun way for young players of all abilities and experience to enjoy rugby at their own pace. Players develop general and rugby-specific sport skills to play the modified games of Walla, Mini and Midi and Under 19. The same night, same location, short sessions and community barbecues make Telstra TryRugby an option for the entire family.
