Once a necessity for homes beyond the reach of the town water supply, water tanks are now a lifestyle choice. Owning a water tank means having the freedom to wash the car (or the boat or the dog) whenever you want, keep your garden green all year round, and fill up the wading pool or turn on the sprinkler for the kids.
Before buying a tank, however, you need to educate yourself about the product - in particular, where and how your tank is made. For those looking to install one of these erstwhile Aussie icons, local manufacturer Q Tank provides a handy guide to getting tanked!
Choosing your tank
Choosing a water tank is a big decision, and there are a number of important things that you, as a consumer, need to ask to ensure your tank is a quality product.
Where is the tank made?
Is the tank imported, or made by a local manufacturer?
Testing of your tank
Make sure your tank has been individually tested. These tests should include an impact test, thickness test and visual inspection (inside and out) for defects. Good manufacturers will be able to trace your product to its source material by producing a written report on what tests it underwent before leaving the factory. Don’t be afraid to ask for a test report!
What is included in the price of your tank?
Are there hidden costs or extras that you will need?
What is the tank made out of?
Tanks should be made out of the highest grade, UV protected, food grade, Hexene Polythylene, however, some imported tanks may not be made from material that has been properly tested.
Is there a warranty with the tank?
Don't be seduced by lengthy warranties. Australian Standards recommend a 10 year warranty (not pro-rata and with minimal fine print).
Does the tank comply with the Australian Standard AS4766?
Ask the manufacturer for an Australian Standard Compliance Report.
Has the tank been made by a member of the Association of Rotational Moulders Australasia (ARMA)?
