A safe home
There are so many things to be aware of and to teach children about to keep them safe.
The NRMA Insurance website has articles and tips that will help you provide a safe home environment. Energex has great information about electrical safety and Origin Energy can help you with gas safety.
Queensland Fire Service has information to help you protect your home and family from fire and they can also send firefighters to your home to do a free home safety check to help you safeguard your home and family against fire.
HealthInsite has information about all aspects of child safety.
Travel safe
You'll want to keep your children safe when travelling too. Children need some form of booster seat or harness when travelling in cars until they weigh 26 kgs. For most children this is until they are approximately seven years old. Queensland Transport gives descriptions of the types of restraints and how to use them safely. The Bub Hub also has an easy-to-read summary of child restraints, particularly their use in taxis.
Safety for older kids
As kids get older you'll need to teach them about things like road safety and how to be safe on the internet. There's more useful information to help children be aware, have fun and stay safe online at Cybersmart Kids Online.
In emergencies
You can teach your family about poisons information and what to do if there's a fire. You may also want to have a look at the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service guidelines for preparing an evacuation plan for your home and St John's Ambulance quick reference first aid information.
Teach your children how to dial "000" in case of an emergency. Make sure they know your address so they can tell the emergency services. Remember, it's not only children who have accidents. Teaching your child what to do if you get into difficulties may save your life.
