Snapshot

Did you know that Beaudesert Road is one of the oldest roads in the district? It was built to transport goods between the 50,000-acre property of Beaudesert and Brisbane. The Brisbane Markets on Sherwood Road, Rocklea offer fresh fruit and veg along with a huge selection of flowers. The first golf club in Brisbane, The Brisbane Golf Club Inc. can be found in Tennyson Memorial Avenue, Yeerongpilly. It was opened in 1896 by club president, colonial governor and keen golfer Lord Lamington. Every Sunday is 'market day' at the Rocklea Flea Markets so go along and get yourself a bargain.

Shopping

Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. Fairfield Gardens in Fairfield is the major shopping centre in your area and is only a bus ride away.

Family fun

For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. For family fun why not visit Yeronga Park in Yeronga or try Russ Hall Park in Salisbury?

For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Fairfield Park in Fairfield, Hyde Park in Yeronga, Shaftsbury Street Park in Tarragindi or Salisbury Recreation Reserve.

Take a break

Discover the secrets of your local area. Find the hidden treasures in Toohey Forest Park, located between Mt Gravatt and Tarragindi. The walking tracks offer many wildlife-spotting opportunities in the open eucalypt forest, creeks and gullies. You could also take a trip to Skyline Avenue in Tarragindi and enjoy the views, or ride along the bikeway by Rocky Water Holes Creek in Russ Hall Park in Salisbury.

Meet friends

No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends at Dudley Street, Annerley Junction, and get a feel for local settlement history through the unique street artwork. Shop for antiques along the old Cobb and Co route or step back in time to the setting of author Hugh Lunn's book, Over the top with Jim. Also visit Beaudesert Road and Luxworth Street, Moorooka where you'll find sculptures of three bronze saplings inspired by the local Toohey Forest.

Exercise

Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. Or, go for laps at the Yeronga Pool (you'll double the exercise by walking there). For fun and fitness, try your nearest Active and Healthy Park such as Moolabin, Koala and Pegg's Parks in Moorooka. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.

The weekend

Escape from the city to the great outdoors - you don't have to go far in Brisbane. Jump on a bicycle or go for a walk along the Moorooka Bikeway through Koala and Pegg Parks. Or pack a picnic and visit the beautiful Rosebank Square Park at Salisbury.

Learn

CHALLENGE YOUR MIND at the Annerley or Fairfield Libraries. Libraries offer anything from storytime to free internet access and training.

For kids: and free internet training to lively book discussions and special events (phone the library for details).
