Our review

Never before in the history of romantic comedies have moviegoers encountered a feature as highly anticipated as Sex and the City: The Movie (SATC). With a publicity machine whirring louder than Times Square, the film has some big Manolo Blahniks to fill.

With bated breath in the air, it's not surprising there are high expectations riding on the back of this TV spin-off. Can relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her designer-clad entourage live up to the hype and go from cult-TV heroines to big-screen superstars?

Armed with shoeboxes of popcorn and cosmopolitan cocktails, the mostly female audience can settle in for a two-and-a-half hour marathon as if catching up with a group of old friends. Indeed, from start to finish, a sense of familiarity pervades the screen as the glamour girls spill their Jimmy Choo clutches on all matters relating to the heart.

The film kicks off with a clever montage that strings together the past story arcs of Carrie and her confidantes: Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). We are quickly brought up-to-speed with what each character has been doing since the TV series wrapped, which serves as a great refresher for fans as well as a handy crash course for newcomers.

Carrie reminds us that "year after year, 20-something women come to New York City in search of the two Ls: labels and love". Now that the fabulous four have successfully achieved both these missions, Carrie asks what happens after you find "the one"? Quite a pertinent question considering she's on the brink of moving in with boyfriend Big (Chris Noth). Drum roll, please.

The ensuing storyline revolves around Carrie (ubiquitous voiceover in tow) while flitting between the trials and tribulations of Samantha and Miranda. Kooky Charlotte is deployed for light relief throughout the film to great effect, with antics sure to cause uproarious laughter.

Of course, SATC wouldn't be complete without one too many gratuitous fashion scenes, several cringe-worthy and high-pitched girly squeals, and a couple of extreme close-ups of naked hunks - not to mention a raunchy sex scene of Miranda and hubby Steve (David Eigenberg) which leaves little to the imagination.

So, what's the moral of writer-director Michael Patrick King's story? Trends come and go and fashions phase in and out, but it's love and friendship that matter in the end. As Carrie would tell you, love is complicated - sometimes you have to throw logic and reason out the window and just follow your heart, but it's all worth it in the end.

With the girls so close to our hearts, we ponder the question: is this the last we'll see of them or will there be a sequel?

8/10
