Our review

For anyone who grew up watching "Get Smart" on the small screen, the "Get Smart" film is a nostalgic trip which revisits old friends Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 and reacquaints us with the evil crime syndicate KAOS on a mission to dominate the world and CONTROL's mission to save it!

This entertaining action-comedy extravaganza will please both the loyal fans of the TV show and the audience being introduced to "Get Smart" for the first time.

Steve Carell is hilarious as Maxwell Smart, the bungling, former-fatty analyst who is promoted to the position of Agent 86 for CONTROL, with smart, sassy and sexy Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) by his side. Dwayne Johnson also makes an appearance as the invincible Agent 23 and is surprisingly enjoyable to watch.

When the identities of secret agents are compromised after the CONTROL headquarters is attacked, Maxwell and 99 are partnered to stop the menace of KAOS, headed by the violin-playing Siegfried (Terence Stamp).

Max and his seemingly more capable partner Agent 99 foil Siegfried's plans to detonate a bomb at the end of Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' at a classical concert in Los Angeles attended by the US President (played by James Caan), all the while trying to uncover the identity of the double agent who lurks amidst the agents of CONTROL.

All the favourite "Get Smart" gadgets (the shoe phone, the cone of silence) and trademark lines ("missed it by that much", "would you believe...") make an appearance in the film, as does the original theme song and archetypal phone booth.

Consistently funny and thoroughly entertaining, "Get Smart" is an adrenaline-pumped action-comedy that will have you laughing from start to finish.

Don't forget to look out for the funniest dance-off to hit the big screen in a long time when Max tangos with a hefty Russian lady to take on Agent 99 and KAOS's suave Ladislas Krstic.

8/10

NiallKristina from Alderley says:

Get Smart is good, clean, uncomplicated, enjoyable fun.

The 95 minutes that the film lasts shot past, and suddenly it was over, and that's always a sign of a good movie.

The three of us watching it laughed out loud frequently. There were loads of amusing lines and sight gags (including a sly one - one scene is set on an airliner, and unless I mis-read it, the name of the airline was Yarmy Airlines. The real name of Don Adams from the original TV show was Donald Yarmy.)

The action sequences were competent, including a couple of scenes that were humourous takes on scenes from other movies (James Bond?); one where Maxwell and 99 work their way through a room with criss-cross security lasers, and another involving a free-fall and parachute descent from the airliner.

The only jarring note was the (humourous) petty rivalry between Max and 99. I don't recall that from the original TV series.

Overall, I agree with your reviewer - 8/10.
