Sunnybank offers a thriving suburban Chinatown.
Sunnybank suburb profile
Sunnybank is one of Brisbane's largest suburbs in terms of population and has been particularly popular with migrants from East Asia, who have transformed it into a thriving suburban Chinatown.
Dining
If you’re after the best Asian food in Brisbane, Sunnybank is the place for you. There are extensive Chinese restaurants, supermarkets and other outlets to choose between. Sunday morning yum cha sees people from all over Brisbane flock to Sunnybank. The queues for Shangri-La and Landmark restaurants are testament to the way Brisbanites are embracing the cheap, exciting and delicious food available on the yum cha trolleys.
Location
Sunnybank is an outer southern Brisbane suburb that grew rapidly during the 1960s and is located about 14km south of Brisbane's central business district. It is close to the Nathan campus of Griffith University and the Queensland Athletics Centre.
The next suburb along, a little bit further from the CBD, is Sunnybank Hills, which, as its name suggests, is more elevated than Sunnybank.
Houses
Sunnybank housing styles tend to be about 25 years old and are predominantly low-set and high-set brick. There are also timber homes in the area and ex-housing commission weatherboard post-war homes, which date back to the original development of the area.
Growth
Sunnybank has grown significantly over the past 20 years. The catalyst for much of the growth was the construction of the South East Freeway to Mains Road during the late 1970s, which resulted in the region being easily accessible to the Brisbane's central business district.
Investment
Sunnybank and Sunnybank Hills posted a gross rental yield of 3.8% for houses and 5.6% for units and townhouses over the June quarter. The unit and townhouse result was the fourth best in Brisbane over the period.
Shopping
The suburb is serviced by several shopping centres, including the extensive Sunnybank Plaza. A short drive further along Mains Road takes you to the neighbouring suburb of Sunnybank Hills where you’ll find the Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town.
Schools and services
Several primary schools, a state high school, a private hospital and a city council library are some of the community facilities that service Sunnybank.
Public transport
Sunnybank boasts its own railway station. There are regular Cityexpress services to the Brisbane CBD and the northern portion of the suburb is serviced by the Citytrain rail service at Sunnybank station.
