Population
Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city - with only Melbourne and Sydney being larger. Brisbane’s resident population in 2006 was 1.76 million, according to the 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The Brisbane City Council says that 16,000 people move to the city each year.
Cultural diversity
The population is also culturally diverse. Currently over 28% of Brisbane’s population was born overseas. In 2006 over 17% of the population spoke a language other than English at home with Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Italian and Samoan being some of the most commonly spoken languages.
