Perfectly situated between the cities of Brisbane and Toowoomba, the scenic Brisbane Valley allows visitors to access the region from numerous points.
The Somerset Regional Council invites you to discover the Valley of the Lakes and enjoy the essence of each township. You'll find intimate settlements of rustic country charm, genuine hospitality, magnificent dams and panoramic views, and relaxing scenic drives throughout the Valley.
Travel
One hour south-west from downtown Brisbane.
Esk can be approached from south west or north west of Brisbane.
- head west from Brisbane along Ipswich Road and the Warrego Highway, then take the Brisbane Valley Highway turnoff; or
- travel north along the Bruce Highway (Highway 1) and turn off for the D’Aguilar Highway (Highway 17)
What to do
- fish, sail, or simply relax on Wivenhoe, Somerset or Atkinson Dams (water ski enthusiasts can also have a go on Somerset or Atkinson)
- discover our heritage by visiting one of the old homesteads at Coominya, Esk or Caboonbah
- drive the Heritage Trail from Fernvale to Linville
- stroll through the streets of the little towns and check out the antique shops - Esk’s main street has several to choose from
- visit the Brisbane Valley Ostrich & Fish Farm
- catch and release a fish at the fish farm
- skydive, go horse riding and maybe kiss a camel

- try a farmstay, especially if you are hosting an overseas visitor
- motels in Togoolawah, Esk, Lowood or Fernvale
- the caravan park in Esk or Lowood
- go camping at one of the Lakes
Where to eat and drink
- there are lovely picnic spots by the Brisbane River, at any of the dams or at one of the great little parks in town
- try a counter meal at a local hotel
- little cafés in Moore, Toogoolawah, Esk, Lowood, Coominya, Cormorant Bay at Wivenhoe Dam or Fernvale also do great takeaways
