With such a wide variety of National Parks within the Scenic Rim Regional Council, there’s no shortage of walks to choose from. In fact the hardest part of writing this article, is deciding which walks to leave out…
I have chosen three classic walks that give visitors a taste of the different landscapes.
1. The Witches Falls Circuit on Tamborine Mountain is a 3.4km easy graded walk which will give you a view of one of the spectacular waterfalls. This hour long walk passes through open eucalypt forest as well as large stands of piccabeen palms. The falls, particularly impressive following rain, are the result of a small creek flowing over the edge of a 100 metre high escarpment that runs along the side of Tamborine Mountain.
2. The Daves Creek Circuit is accessed via the Binna Burra end of Lamington National Park. This walk is 12km long and passes through some of the most diverse vegetation habitats in Lamington National Park. Starting in rainforest, this soon changes to the smooth barked mountain mallees which in turn give way to low mountain heath, including colourful banksia and callistemon flowers. This walk is blessed by low vegetation which allows you almost continuous views as you progress.
3. For the more adventurous, an expedition up Mt Barney is the ultimate challenge. Rising one kilometre above the surrounding landscape and with views stretching to Mt Warning in the south and Brisbane in the north, Mt Barney is revered as one of the walks that you must do to experience South East Queensland.
I hope this article gives you a taste of the walks. This article should not be relied upon to guide you on the walk. Either be guided by professional staff from one of the lodges or resorts close to the national park, or access information from the Environmental Protection Agency or books Bushwalking in South East Queensland or Take a Walk in Queensland’s National Parks.
