Ginger & Smart design

Di Cant recently caught up with these brilliant designer sisters, Alexandra and Genevieve Smart. I admire the label firstly for its sensational leather bags, belts and other accessories but now we all love the fabulous collection of dresses, pants and tops.

Q: Where did it all begin for Ginger and Smart?

A: It began in 2002 with a spa range then high profile leather accessories followed by high fashion - an evolution of growth - supplying our chosen retailers.

Q: Sisters in business! How does that work?

A: Alexandra - it's a collaboration of business, commercial and creative. Genevieve is really the creative though we stick our noses into each other's business...it works.

Q: What inspires and influences the designs of a new collection?

A: We are inspired by all sorts of design, fabrics, prints, architecture, lifestyle and, importantly, by what women want to wear.

Q: What was the most notable moment in the history of Ginger and Smart?

A: Genevieve - opening the Ginger and Smart store on William Street in Paddington, Sydney.

Q: Who is your customer?

A: Young to mature - it's not about age. It's for the woman who wants to look effortlessly chic. It's about attitude, shapes and quality.

Q: Where do you have the accessories made?

A: Australia. They are made in Australia by old craftsmen from beautiful Italian leathers. A bag takes two full days to make.

Q: What is your favourite destination in the world.

A: Both answered Paris.

Q: A travel tip please from you both.

A: Alexandra - lingerie bags to pack tights and shoes. Genevieve - a grey cashmere wrap and an eyemask.
