If there is an emergency situation in Brisbane's CBD, there are plans in place to help people respond to the situation. If you work, live or visit the CBD, read through what you might need to do.
For example, do you know where to go if your building is evacuated? Have you made arrangements for someone to collect your children if you were unable to in an emergency? Can you access a battery powered radio for updates? Note that mobile phones may not work during an emergency.
Map
Look at the map to see what streets and areas are covered in the CBD plan. It basically covers the city centre between the William Jolly and Story Bridges and bordered by Roma Street Parkland and Spring Hill.
Be prepared
Read what you can do to be prepared. This includes having a personal evacuation plan and emergency pack.
Read what businesses need to do to be ready for an emergency. Some measures include having evacuation plans and drills and being able to receive communications about the situation.
There are special plans in place to cope with looking after children in CBD child care centres.
Plus, depending on the emergency, transport services and traffic may be affected. Keep in contact with announcements or online traffic updates for more information.
Emergency support sites
If there is a mass evacuation of Brisbane city, please move to one of the emergency support sites at:
- Suncorp Stadium, Castlemaine Street, Milton
- South Bank Parklands, Little Stanley Street, South Bank
- Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Merivale Street, South Bank
- RNA Showground, Gregory Terrace, Brisbane CBD
Key terms
There are a few key terms which everyone should know in case of an emergency.
- Assembly area: the area adjacent to your building where occupants can assemble if there is an evacuation.
- Evacuation route: the route from your building assembly area to the emergency support sites.
- Shelter-in-place: may include moving to a certain level, side or part of a building or location. If you are not at immediate risk, you may be directed to shelter-in-place as the safest option.
- Immediate evacuation: people immediately at risk should evacuate themselves, or if instructed by emergency services, to the assembly area.
- Mass evacuation: when you are directed to move out of the CBD. If this happens, there may be information about activated emergency support sites and the best way to get there.
