Profile
One of Brisbane’s more prestigious suburbs, Clayfield is located 6.5km north of the CBD near Ascot and Hamilton and is home to many fine examples of older Queenslanders.
In recent years the suburb has seen the growth of medium density units, resulting in a strong rental market capitalising on the close proximity to the CBD, the airport and major transport routes.
Despite this, housing still makes up the majority (70 per cent) of accommodation in the area. A progression from older residents and retirees to young families and couples has seen residential development slowing with people opting for renovation of older housing.
Clayfield residents have access to a wide variety of transport, services and retail facilities, either in the suburb itself or within striking distance.
The Royal Brisbane Hospital is approximately 15 minutes away and there are a number of state and private schools in the area catering for both primary and secondary school children, including the private girl’s school Clayfield College.
Westfield Shoppingtown Toombul is the closest major shopping centre with Lutwyche shopping centre also close. A bit further to the north on Gympie Road is Chermside Shopping Centre.
Residents are also well catered for in the outdoor recreational stakes with parks, bike and walk ways. The suburb has a lively café lifestyle and is close to Racecourse Road and the Eagle Farm and Doomben race courses.
The revitalised restaurant district at Albion also offers residents a great choice of cuisine.
Public transport includes the northern train line with stops at Albion Station, Wooloowin Station, Eagle Junction Station, and Toombul Station. Bus and ferry routes are also available and residents also have easy access to the airport and Gateway arterial.
According to the 2006 Census, there were 9,533 people living in the suburb with a median age of 35. The median individual income was $680 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 50.5% were either fully owned or being purchased; 41.4% were being rented.
