Doolandella
History of Brisbane's Doolandella
« back to Doolandella home
Doolandella's history has been compiled as part of the BRISbites community history project.
Aboriginal history
Doolandella, or Dulandella, is the Aboriginal name for the geebung tree and its fruit. This is from the Yugarbul dialect.
Urban development
Doolandella is adjacent to the urban developments of Forest Lake and Inala. Part of the urban area of Serviceton and a small section of the Forest Lake development between Blunder Creek and Blunder Road are within Doolandella. The remainder is bushland and acreage living.
Notable people
Michael "Stumpy" Durack was one of the original landholders of the area. He purchased part of the original Archerfield Station from Mary Murphy in 1882. Archerfield was named after the Archer family, who are probably best known for their settlement of the Gracemere area near Rockhampton.
Stumpy Durack lived in the area with his wife and children until 1888. He had both Aboriginal and Kanaka workers on the property where sugar cane, fruit, and tobacco were grown, cattle and horses were reared, and timber was felled. He sold the property to the Sand and Coal Company in the late 1880s.
Landmarks
The main landmark in Doolandella is Blunder Creek. For many years sand extraction for road building took place in this area.
