Snapshot
The Skyline Drive-In Theatre in Sunnybank Hills opened in 1957 as Brisbane's second drive-in. It could hold 650 cars on its 17 acres and also had a children's railway line, putt putt, badminton facilities and a dance floor. It was used for parking during the Commonwealth Games. Compton Road was named after one of the pioneering families in the region and now joins nine suburbs from Beaudesert Road to Logan Road. It was a rough track until the 1930s, running only between Gowan and Beaudesert Roads.
Shopping
Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. Check the map for local convenience centres. The major shopping centres of Garden City or Sunnybank Plaza are a bus ride away. Both have entertainment arcades and cinemas.
Family fun
For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. In your area, try Gowan Road Park at Calamvale. It offers a basketball half-court, rollerblading, playground and BBQ area. How about the BAT Adventure Park in Calamvale? The Brady Bushland Park is another great recreational reserve for kids or take the family down to the Yorrell Street Park in Algester or Argyle Place in Parkinson.
For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try the park on Hamish Street in Calamvale or Yorrell Street in Algester.
Take a break
Discover the secrets of your local area. Enjoy the walkways and bikeways that follow the creek from Yorrell Street all the way through to Argyle Place. Go wildlife spotting in Sheep Station Gully and take in Brisbane's beautiful scenery.
Meet friends
No need to travel far - catch up with friends at nearby Mains Road, Sunnybank Hills for a coffee or dining with an international flavour. Sunnybank is home to some of the city's best Asian cuisine. While you're there, look for the rainbow lorikeets featured in the glass and ceramic sculptures.
Exercise
Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. For fitness and fun try your nearest Active and Healthy Park including Gowan Road Park at Calamvale.
The weekend
Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane, you don't have to go far. Wander around the nearby Karawatha Forest - with more than 600 hectares of bushland, it is one of Brisbane's largest areas of bushland. Karawatha has more than 270 plant species, 200 species of wildlife and more than 100 species of birdlife. Visit the Illaweena Picnic Area and spot the turtles and waterdragons basking in the sun.
