Snapshot

Hughesville is the heritage-listed residence (the backdrop for a local beer advertisement) located on the corner of Logan and Padstow Road. The timber home was reputedly built for Richard Hughes as a wedding gift from his father Alfred Hughes, a local horse dealer. Brisbane Technology Park is located on a 30-hectare site in Eight Mile Plains, near the Busway Transit Station. The park encourages small and medium sized companies to develop computer age technologies and manufacturing processes. Did you know 'Eight Mile Plains' refers to the distance by bush track to One Mile Swamp (now Woolloongabba)?

Shopping

Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. Check the map for local convenience centres. The major shopping centres of Garden City, Sunnybank Hills and Sunnybank Plaza are a bus ride away.

Family fun

For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. In your area, try the peaceful wetlands at Les Atkinson Park in Sunnybank with the adjoining Pengana playground. JackPyle Park at Sunnybank Hills has a kids playground and basketball court.

For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Daw Road Park at Runcorn and Wally Tate Park at Kuraby.

Take a Break

Discover the secrets of your local area. Kuraby Bushland on Compton Road is an open forest of eucalypt stringybarks, sandstone ridges and creeks. It is home to 74 species of animals including 15 that are locally or regionally significant. Look out for birds, reptiles, brindled bandicoots, flying foxes and ringtailed possums. Pack a picnic and head down to Les Atkinson Park, with its 19 hectares of peaceful wetlands. The boardwalks and the viewing platforms provide the perfect spots for watching wildlife on the lakes.

Meet friends

No need to travel far - catch up with friends at nearby Mains Road, Sunnybank, home to some of the city's best Asian cuisine and retail stores. Or visit the Kuraby 'suburban village' on Beenleigh Road where you'll experience the feeling of a 'country town in the city'. You'll find ceramic pavement inlays that were created by local young people, including disability groups.

Exercise

Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. For fitness and fun, try your nearest Active and Healthy Park including Ditton Road Park, Sunnybank or Svoboda Park at Kuraby. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.

The weekend

Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane, you don't have to go far. Wally Tate Park at Kuraby has more than 50 hectares of bush and open space, which crosses over Bulimba Creek. The park is right next to the Kuraby railway station, so travel is easy!

Learn

Release your mind at the Sunnybank Hills Library, where you'll find not only books but also CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access, even storytelling sessions for children (phone the library for details). Sunnybank Hills Library also offers free internet and computer training in Chinese.
