Snapshot
Phat Da Buddhist Temple in Deodor Street provides a venue for meditation and has a small library. Heritage Park is the site of the original Archerfield Homestead. The avenue of mango trees marked the track to the house. Cobb and Co coaches once travelled this route. The only reminder of the house is the rotunda in the park. Did you know a flourishing vineyard used to stand on the grounds of the nearby Richlands School? Inala was originally part of Archerfield grazing station, around the 1890s. During World War II it was known as Camp Columbia, a large American military base. The name Wacol comes from the fact that all the coal from the West Moreton field from 1914 was weighed here - hence the name Wacol.
Shopping
Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. Check the map for local convenience centres.
Family fun
For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. Banksia Village Park, Forest Lake and the Community Park at Carole Park are both great places for the young ones.
For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try the park off College Avenue at Forest Lake, Inala Reservoir, or Clive McDermott Place in Inala.
Take a break
Discover the secrets of your local area. Explore Blunder and Oxley Creek bushland areas. Here you might be able to spot wildlife such as echidnas, bandicoots, koalas, brushtail or ringtail possums, sugar gliders, whiptail wallabies or red-neck wallabies. Or try Forest Lake Lions Park or Pine Village Park for a bit of relaxation.
Meet friends
No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends at nearby Biota Street, Inala and enjoy a coffee on the sidewalk in Brisbane's beautiful sunshine. Check out the 'happy faces' balustrade and unique rock art seats while you're there.
Exercise
Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. You could even do a few laps of the Carole Park Pool (you'll double the exercise by walking there). For fitness and fun, try your nearest park. Try nearby Durack Common, Inala or the parks with bike and walkways all around Forest Lake.
The weekend
Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane, you don't have to go far. In your area, the beautiful Lake Parklands at Forest Lake is Brisbane's largest recreational lake. You can go sailing or canoeing, enjoy basketball or rollerblading beside the lake.
Learn
Release your mind at Inala Library, where you'll find not only books but also CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access and training, even storytelling sessions for children (phone the library for details). Inala Library offers computer classes in Vietnamese and other languages.
