Snapshot

Points of interest in your area include the view from the Bulimba Ferry Terminal, at the end of Oxford Street, the boat ramp and pontoon at Colmslie Beach Reserve, the Cannon Hill School of Arts on Wynnum Road and the many renovated timber 'Queenslanders' in Bulimba and Norman Park. Did you know that after World War I, Balmoral had a foxhunting club - but no foxes? Instead, hounds and horses pursued the trail of a salted fish dragged by a human runner. A 'goanna' oil business operated in Bulimba until 1982. Operations have since moved to Tennyson, and goannas are no longer an ingredient.

Shopping

Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. The map shows convenience centres near you. The major shopping centres of Cannon Hill Plaza and Carindale Shopping Centre are just a bus ride away.

Family fun

For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. In your area try Bulimba Memorial Park or Balmoral Park for family fun. Colmslie Beach Reserve is home to the famous Octopus Garden - a favourite play destination for children by the Brisbane River. The colourful and interesting playground design will keep the little ones busy for hours.

For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Keralgerie Park in Morningside or Colmslie Recreation Reserve.

Take a break

Discover the secrets of your local area. Green thumbs know it: the best plants to grow in your suburb are the ones looking great in other gardens. Take a walk, have a look and talk to gardeners in your area to find out which plants like the local conditions. Learn about your area's heritage with a visit to Balmoral cemetery history trails.

Meet friends

No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends at Bulimba and Morningside. Or take in a film at Bulimba or Hawthorne cinemas.

Exercise

Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest bus stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. For fitness and fun try your nearest Active and Healthy Park including Hawthorne Park in Hawthorne or Regent Park in Cannon Hill. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.

The weekend

Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane, you don't have to go far. Take a picnic to Hawthorne Park or Vic Lucas Park, Bulimba. You could also visit Minnippi Wetlands or Murarrie Recreation Reserve or the Seven Hills Bushland Reserve, consisting of 51 hectares of open eucalypt forest.

Learn

Release your mind at the Bulimba or nearby Carina Libraries, where you'll find not only books but also CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access, even storytelling sessions for children (phone the libraries for details).
