Snapshot

The back streets of Woolloongabba and East Brisbane are lined with classic workers cottages, keeping Brisbane's 'timber and tin' character alive. The bronze sculpture of local legend Monty the Shopping Dog, carrying his basket, can be found at Stones Corner (RIP Monty). Watch for the large flying fox colony on the creek bank, near the Anglican Grammar School or 'Churchie'.

Shopping

Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. The map shows convenience centres near you. Carindale Shopping Centre, which has a major cinema complex, is just a bus ride away .

Family fun

For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. For family fun visit Tarragindi Recreation Reserve in Tarragindi, Glindemann Park in Holland Park, Langlands Park or Wembley Park in Coorparoo.

For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Woolloongabba Rotary Park, Shaftesbury Park at Tarragindi, or Wembley Park, Coorparoo.

Take a break

Discover the secrets of your local area. Enjoy the many and varied walking tracks and bikeways along Norman Creek and through Bowie's Flat Wetlands, White Hills Reserve and Toohey Forest Park - your area has an abundance of parks and bushland areas. Go wildlife spotting and enjoy Brisbane's beautiful scenery.

Meet friends

No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends for retail therapy at bargain prices at Stones Corner. Street artwork even features a fashion theme. Or check out Seville Road, Holland Park with timber and metal seats made by local 10 -14 year olds, in partnership with the local Chill Out youth project. And exciting news for Holland Park residents - the revitalisation of the shopping precinct at Logan Road is due for completion in late 2004.

Exercise

Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. If you like swimming, why not visit Langlands Park Pool at Stones Corner? For fitness and fun try your nearest Active and Healthy Park such as Heath and Giffen Parks, making up the Coorparoo Sports Complex with a range of activities including walking and cycle tracks or Majestic Park in Coorparoo or Lavarack Park at Camp Hill. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.

The weekend

Escape from the city to the great outdoors - you don't have to go far in Brisbane. Take a stroll through the 171-hectare, Whites Hill Reserve on Boundary Road in Camp Hill. This area features significant bushland with walking tracks, playground equipment, picnic areas and other recreational facilities. The Seven Hills Reserve on Latina Avenue in Seven Hills also has a range of popular walking tracks. You can learn while you're walking - follow the interpretive signage along the tracks.

Learn

Release your mind at Stones Corner or Holland Park Libraries, where you'll find not only books but CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access, even storytelling sessions for children (phone libraries for details).
