Snapshot
The place name Wynnum is derived from the Indigenous name for the pandanus palm. Local attractions include the model train rides with the Live Steamers Group on Wynnum Road, the Wynnum Golf Club and the free concerts at Bandstand Park. The Manly Creative Markets are held every Sunday between 8am and 3pm. Find that special gift or just browse the range of arts, crafts and plants. The Wading Pool on the Wynnum foreshore opened in 1932. At high tide it fills with seawater which is retained by closing valves along the sea-wall. Fort Lytton on South Street in nearby Lytton is also well worth the visit. Learn about Queensland's military and social history from 1879-1950s at this 19th century fortress.
Shopping
Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. The major shopping centres of Wynnum Plaza and Wynnum Central are only a bus ride away.
Family fun
For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. In your area, try the beautiful Bayside Parklands, a series of parks stretching 16 kilometres along the south-eastern shore and linking to Brisbane Koala Bushlands. Looking for more family fun? Why not visit Lota Esplanade, Wynnum Wading Pool or George Clayton Park.
For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Brisbane's largest off-leash park at Elanora Park, Wynnum North, the park off Stannard Street, Manly West, or Bill Lamond Park in Lota.
Take a break
Discover the secrets of your local area. Locals and visitors alike love the breathtaking bay views and cool sea breezes from Wynnum Pier, the Manly Boat Harbour and the hills behind. Why not spoil yourself and have some fish and chips or lunch along the esplanade? If you would like to explore the bay and islands further, take one of the many sailing tours. You might even catch a glimpse of some dugongs and dolphins in your travels.
Meet friends
No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends at Wynnum Central, known as 'Village by the Bay', or Manly Harbour Village,Brisbane's gateway to Moreton Bay and the Islands.
Exercise
Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest bus stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. Or, go for laps at the Manly Pool (you'll double the exercise by walking there). For fitness and fun, try your nearest Active and Healthy Park, such as Manly Foreshore Parks and Elanora Park in Wynnum. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.
The weekend
Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane you don't have to go far. Enjoy a picnic at your local park, or take a stroll through Bayside Parklands, a series of parks covering 500 hectares of bushland, wetlands and recreational space with playgrounds, a wading pool, mangrove boardwalk, bushwalking and BBQ facilities. The Melaleuca Environmental Park, golf courses and driving ranges and parklands running along the esplanade in Wynnum and Manly, complement the area's local recreational parks.
Learn
Release your mind at the Wynnum Library, where you'll find not only books but CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access, even storytelling sessions for children (phone the library for details).
