Snapshot
Visitors are welcome at the Evergreen Taoist Church at Depot Rd, Deagon. The annual Brisbane to Gladstone Race starts at Shorncliffe Pier each Good Friday. Sandgate's history as a newly-wed's destination is echoed in the 'kissing fish' drinking fountain on Brighton Road. The fig tree opposite Sandgate Town Hall was planted in the 1880s and was known as the 'tree of knowledge'. For something different, visit the Artrageous Community Art Centre and Gallery in Loftus St, Deagon.
Shopping
Forgot a few things at the regular grocery shop? Why not leave the car keys behind and pick up what you need on the way home from the bus stop, or take a walk or bike ride to the local shops. The map shows convenience centres near you. The major shopping centres of Strathpine or Taigum are just a bus ride away.
Family fun
For kids: check your local playground - parks in Brisbane have anything from skatebowls to toddler play. In your area, try Sandgate Foreshores or Einbunpin Lagoon for family fun.
For dogs: check out the local off-leash areas where Fido can release canine tension. Try Decker Park, 25th Avenue, Brighton or Curlew Park, Sandgate. Take your other family member for a run, enjoy the surroundings and chat with other pet owners.
Take a break
Discover the secrets of your local area. Take in the delights of Moreton Bay with a bike ride or a wander along the foreshore that extends from Brighton to Shorncliffe. Follow Sandgate's Heritage Trail taking in Sandgate Post Office, Railway Station and Pier.
Meet friends
No need to travel far for coffee or a meal - catch up with friends at Brighton Road, Sandgate. Keep an eye out for the soldier crabs that feature in the pavements and were hand crafted by local school children.
Exercise
Who's got time? Everyone, if you make exercise part of your everyday life. You could walk to the nearest bus stop and catch the bus to work, or take the kids to school. 3 x 10 mins daily exercise is recommended for good health. Or, go for laps at the Sandgate Pool on Flinders Parade. (You'll double the exercise by walking there). For fitness and fun, try your nearest Active and Healthy Park including Sandgate Brighton Foreshores. Why not join your local 'gonewalking' group for fitness or leisure walks with trained walk leaders? For details about walks in your area, phone Council on 3403 8888.
The weekend
Escape from the city to the great outdoors: and in Brisbane, you don't have to go far. Take a picnic to the local park or explore the nearby Boondall Wetlands (with extensive walking and cycling tracks), Deagon Wetlands and foreshore of Cabbage Tree Head at Shorncliffe (with boat ramp and park).
Learn
Release your mind at Sandgate Library, where you'll find not only books but CDs, DVDs, videos, free internet access, even storytelling sessions for children (phone the library for details). To escape the present by visiting the past, visit Shorncliffe's Memorial Park with its war memorial and gardens or Moora Park with views across Moreton Bay.
