Profile
About 15 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD and about 30 minutes by car, Wynnum, like the nearby suburb of Lota, is one of Brisbane’s rediscovered suburbs attracting those who wish to live near the ocean.
Wynnum is likely to become one of Brisbane’s high-profile suburbs in years to come as buyers continue to take advantage of low interest rates and the chance to buy bayside property.
At the mouth of the Brisbane River and protected by the bay, Wynnum’s comparatively low median house prices do not reflect the true value of property along the bayside.
The area has a yacht club in nearby Manly and this attracts a lot of interest from people all over the region.
Wynnum is serviced by a train line and the journey to the Brisbane CBD will take approximately 35 minutes. Distance by car to the CBD is about 20-25 minutes along Wynnum Road – longer in peak hour.
The Wynnum Hospital is located in Whites Road, Wynnum. There are a number of public and private schools (approximately six primary, two secondary, six kindergartens). The closest TAFE is at Alexandra Hills approximately 10 minutes away from Wynnum.
The suburb has access to all the major supermarket and retail chains; there is also Manly Harbour Shopping Village and street shopping available. There are approximately four or five local villages as well. Nurseries are also plentiful in the area.
Capalaba Shopping Centre and Carindale Shopping Centres, in neighbouring suburbs are 10-15 minutes away. Plenty of bike and walk ways, a community swimming pool and a seawater wading pool (cleaned regularly) are available to residents. In the summer there are many of outdoor activities such as canoeing, rollerblading, and biking (all available for hire).
There is a School of the Arts and municipal hall where local activities are held.
Over 50% of houses accommodate families and retirees and older residents who make up the majority of the population.
There are a wide cross section of couples and families attracted by the extensive redevelopment around the waterfront precinct and the inspired street scaping around the Wynnum and Manly areas.
With very little land left in close proximity to the waterfront, homebuyers wanting the bayside lifestyle are renovating older homes and cottages.
The Wynnum/Manly area is well serviced by commercial and retail precincts, which continue to thrive as the area gains in popularity.
According to the 2006 Census there were 11,719 people living in the suburb with a median age of 39. The median individual income was $474 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 59.7% were either fully owned or being purchased; 34.1% were being rented.
