Cycling through park

Brisbane has over 500km of bikeways, plus bike friendly trains and ferries. Get on your bike and get moving.

Bikes on public transport

Make your bike trip an adventure and explore different areas of Brisbane by catching a train or ferry with your bike at no extra cost. You could even use a combination of cycling and catching a train, CityCat or ferry to and from work, university or school. It’s a great way to stay fit and healthy.

Bikes on trains

You can take your bicycle on Citytrain services outside peak flow service times.

Bikes on CityCats and ferry services

Passengers can take bikes on all CityCat and Brisbane City Council ferry services (subject to space availability). Cyclists are requested to take extra care and attention to avoid inconvenience to other passengers.

Bikes on buses

Bike racks on buses are currently available on three Brisbane bus routes.

Bikes in bus lanes and transit lanes

Cycling in bus and transit lanes is permitted unless specifically prohibited by signs.

Commuting

Perfect for commuting, cycling can also be a wonderful leisure-time activity. Or, you can ride a little harder for an excellent workout.

Please note that these are popular routes to work so please check by car or at a quiet time to see if they are suitable for you. Cycling on footpaths is permitted in Queensland but as with shared pathways, you must give way to pedestrians, sound your bell and pass on the right.

How to get organised to ride to work

  • Take your work clothes in the day before
  • Keep a set of toiletries at work
  • Have a separate pair of work shoes
  • Convince your organisation to install showers, lockers and secure bike parking (healthy staff are more productive!)

Sharing the road

Learning how to watch for others will reduce the risk of an accident and make travelling by bike a safer option.

For further information about sharing a road be sure to check Queensland Transport's safety tips and road rules for cyclists.

The Amy Gillett Foundation website (Safe together) has tips to promote awareness for both cyclists and motorists when sharing a road.
