Not happy! says:

I am appalled with the public transport system in Brisbane, in particular buses. I cannot count on two hands the number of times I have been standing at a bus stop (after arriving before the bus is due) and am left to wait much longer than it indicates on the timetable OR the amount of times the bus hasn’t showed up at all. I’m not sure I could put that down to the bus not operating but perhaps it showing up a heck of a lot earlier than indicated and not waiting for the poor sucker running towards it.
In this day and age it is imperative that we adopt environmentally friendly means of transport (such as the bus), but let me assure you; if the public transport system doesn’t pull its finger out, I’m sure there are plenty of people who won’t mind increasing their ecological footprint for the sake of getting somewhere on time.
I don’t know one person who is satisfied with public transport. It isn’t only the Brisbane bus service that lets the public down.

sadly I totally agree.. I've even wrote a complaint letter some time ago but i doubt any action has been taken. Another thing the buses do is switch drivers at bus-stops. They bus lane is not very big and when 2 buses stop there it takes up the entire lane and people have to move in front or behind them to be seen by buses they are trying to flag. what's more these areas are VERY DANGEROUS to stop as well. almost in the middle of the road!! what if i had a big baby pram with me and i can't get on as fast as is safe to? my dad is also n a wheelchair and i would NOT get on in this situation. it's very disappointing
i'm sure they try to do it during off-peak times but around 4.30pm almost every day 2 buses will change over at the regatta busstop and i'm there flagging my arms wildly just to attract my bus driver's attention. sometimes they stop sometimes they can't be bothered. seriously.

John from Brisbane says:

You's must be catching different buses to me. The southern busway is fantastic no other city has anything like it. The buz service is every 15min to 5 to 10 minutes during the peak. I catch the route 200 every day have no problems with drivers not stopping except when they are full. I moved from Sydney 2 years ago the buses in Sydney might run later in the night but they the ticketing system is by far no where as good as here and their limited stops bus is not as frequent as the Buz service, My only 2 problems are is the age of the buses here it think some are from the stone age, and some of the drivers are so crabby, but most are fine and friendly.

Casey from Brisbane says:

I happen to think bus drivers are severely incompetent in most cases. It annoys me to no end, when for example a I am waiting for a bus to the city, the 175 usually and where I catch it is probably 4 minutes away from Garden City Westfield yet it is 15 minutes late. It bewilders me how it could possibly take that long from garden city. I have often seen drivers park there bus to the side at the upper mount gravatt busway as they are about to begin there route from there, but do not drive over the stop when the time comes for the bus to arrive. Instead they sit there wasting time. Not there own, but the time of the people on the bus. Woman bus drivers are the worst. Its like they play little games to make the bore of driving buses fun. Like slowing down at every stop when it is visible nobody is there. Just doing stupid pointless stuff. I dont want to contribute to greenhouse gases etc but the buses are generally unreliable alot of the time.

Was driving home tonight doing the speed limit.....had a rude bus driver tailgate me ( a lone female driver), for approximately 2kms till the filthy mouthed driver turned into another street, no way of knowing if this driver had passengers...doubt it. Came close to running into the rear of my vehicle (deliberately) Then made rude comment before turning left.

I have applied several months ago for a bus driving position, having gone and paid for all the preliminaries to get my Drivers Authorisation.
After several email enquires, I am still no further ahead.
I find it a bit frustrating especially having heard about and reading about incidences of inapproprate behavior by existing drivers, who seem to be able to keep their jobs after being abusive and supplying bad service to fee paying passengers. The public deserves better.
I think that if they care so little for their jobs that they should move over for someone who can and would supply a better service.
Courtesy and a willing nature with a smile would be a good place to start!

Aroha from Basin Pocket says:

Unless you've driven buses before, you really know nothing. Maybe some of you need to check out exactly what driving buses entailed before making judgements against the drivers. They run by a run sheet ALL worked out by the so call translink department, if they got the timings right, there wouldn't be so much lateness. They have no loading time during, the runs and times are sorted out by busy bodies sitting at their desk and making these rosters up by looking at the street directory, no conciderations for people getting in or out of these buses, mother's with childerns, the elderly and the disabled. Some of these drivers have a roster that has no over lapping time, they can drive up to 4 1/2 hours without a break, when nature calls, you gotta go regardless if you're male or female and that cuts into your running time. Oh great those big nods say they are putting more buses on the road, BS. All they've done is tighten running times on the already tighten rosters. During peak hour traffic, the drivers are still expected to run a tight shift that can only be done during off peak hours or late at night. No concideration for the traffic, we all know that even in our own vehicle we have traffic blocks. So if you really want a better service, hit those sitting behind close doors, sitting behind their desk fiddling their fingers, not the drivers.

Rick from Brisbane says:

Aroha has got it almost 100% correct. As as a bus driver, I can confirm all that comment. Our award provides for up to 5hrs work before a break of between 40 and 55 mins, for a meal. If traffic is heavy and we run late, the supervisors try and cut that meal break down to a very short 30 mins. I defy anybody to comfortably eat a meal in 30 mins.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the running times allocated to the routes. I myself have had a shift which featured three round trips on the same route, with three different running times. How do they work that out?
As for other comments about rude drivers etc. I wonder how many of you people who complain about rudeness would put up with the absolute rubbish and rudeness that comes from some of the passengers.
Now, we get people who don`t want bus engines to run at the terminus, and require us to turn the motor off.
I wonder how many of those people would sit in a metal and glass box, with no ventilation?
When the motor is switched off, so is the A/C, and those buses heat up very quickly when the A/C is off.
So come on people, before you complain about bus drivers, think about the difficulties we have to put up with. I`m not saying that all drivers are perfect, cos we`re not. But unfortunately, a few baddies give us all a bad name.
Give us a go people.

I've been catching brisbane transport buses for years and ive seen buses left running in the queen street bus station up to 20 minutes and the motor on a bus in an undercover bus station and they should switch off the motor to save money on bus fares and i can see why translink is putting the fares up just to fuel diesel and gas buses left running and one day a bus motor mite overheat by leaving the bus unattended

RayofLight from Brisbane says:

Brisbane's public transport is actually very over priced and BAD.... Now, the cities and coutries which manage to have people use public transport instead of cars have very frequent services (5 minutes or so), cheap and clean.

Public transport in Brisbane, on the other hand, is very infrequent, often late, expensive and dirty (especially the trains, some of them are totally filthy!).

Yes, if you happen to live somewhere near the '15 mins frequency buses' you are very lucky as those services are good, but a lot of other buses run every half to one hour and others are even less frequent than that (often late, too).

My bus runs once an hour and simply does not continure to my area after 6 or 7 pm and hardly exists in the weekends.

TRAINS - half an hour frequency is really BAD by world standards (and even by Aus standards...). The other week they were delayed a lot, too, so I ended up spending more than 4 hours in that week just waiting for delayed trains.... over the weekend, there were no announcements in the stations I used, so we were all waiting without an idea if the trains will be coming and when....shocking.

SYDNEY - to the person who compared this to Sydney - don't. Sydney is NOT an example of good public transport, you will know that if you travelled and lived in other places. Somehow Brisbane seems to be following the public transport prices there, though...

BUS DRIVERS - yes, you are right about the people making the schedules and decisions sitting behind the desk and not using public transport. Agree about the conditions and the loading times needed especially with the elderly, but just be aware that a lot of other jobs have no breaks, too - I worked in some small businesses and could only have 10 minutes lunch a day if lucky, as the jobs were often so demanding that you simply had no time for a break..... a 30 minutes lunch after 5 hrs is, in comparisson, not that bad ;-)

PRICES - going up again and a lot.... especially weekly and monthly tickets! It is not too bad if you are on concession (which Translink seems to be geared towards...) but very expensive if you are on lower to mid income and without a concession plus need to travel a few times a day (so the Go Card ends up being very expensive for people who actually rely solely on public transport).

To really encourage public transport, they need to increase the services (on all routes, as at the moment only the '15 minutes' routes are ok), ensure that public transport is clean, and have cheap prices for everyone (not only concession holders) - this is the only way to push people out of the cars, which will benefit the environment plus make the streets safer (the more people walking around, the safer it is) as well as save money in the long run (less roads and highways).

If only politicians and decision makers were forced to use public transport (and also pay for it from a very tight budget!) things would have been totally different......

Let's hope that if we all (including drivers) voice are opinions things will start to change :-)

Yes, Brissie's prices are just too expensive now for non-consession... I need to travel to work + travel lots on weekends, & since the weekly pass is now went 40% up & go card works too expensive it is no longer worth it using public transport...

I say bring free public transport, like some places overseas - in the long run it saves money (on pollution, roads, road accidents, speed cameras, etc) plus makes a much nicer, friendlier, more civilised and relaxed society. But, hey, this takes lots of guts & our decision makes may not have these...

I got to say that the fares have gone up too much this time! They increased almost 40% of each original price. House price/rent hasn't increased that fast!!

Well, people seem to have got used to the late buses and careless drievers. But how could our public transportation system charge people so much more while maintaining such poor standard of service?

More people including me will consider buying cars as a result of the disappointing and pricy public transport. Awesome! let's get ready for more traffic jams and the rising temperatures

Nadia from Brisbane says:

RayofLight, Emily and the others are right ...WHAT A RIP OFF!!!

We have a dirty, infrequent system (3rd class) which now costs like the best 1st class system in the world....

If they make public transport this expensive, people will use the go cards only to work, or will stop using public transport alltogether and buy cars - at least the car is clean and one does not need to wait ages for it....

Yes, Emily, seems like Brisbane just want to spend more money on roads, and make the people who cannot afford cars to pay for it...or maybe they try to leave public transport only to people on concession cards?

another point - the excessive use of zones.... since most people on lower budget live in the outer suburbs they are punished for doing so...although they tell us that we need to 'spread out'....Brisbane is not big enough to have so many zones and it makes it too expensive - they should get rid of the zones within Brissie & suburbs alltogether!

Doesn't make any sense!

I agree with the comments here - we pay too much, esp. now that prices went up, and we are not getting much in return.

If they really wanted more people to use public transport and make roads safer and less busy, they would have put prices down, not up. So, I think they don't want us to use public transport - that is why they make it expensive, dirty and not frequent... makes sense, people????

Agree with all of the above...the recent price hike proves that Brisbane Council wants us to stop using public transport. Ridiculous indeed.

Instead of having more frequent services (in the north, we have pre-historic type of frequency, plus delays...) or cleaning the verhicles/trains/stops/stations properly, they just put prices up (much easier to do...)

I say - get rid of the silly zone system (the more money you have to live in the inner city, the less you spend on travel... makes no sense), bring cheap tranport to everyone (some of us have no concession but live on low wages!), have more services, and please clean stations, too.

Have to agree with most! :) Well, I've just moved to Brisbane and am still settling in I suppose.

I don't have huge complaints, I guess I don't expect perfection. But the service could definately see some improvement. I just finished a weekly ticket I purchased for $35(ish)... I was pretty shocked at the price, I should've changed my mind I think, because it was not worth it! I mostly walk, and take the bus only when I need to. I would think mostly because the bus system is unreliable.

I will say though... I am surprised that the drivers accept payments and give out change. I think the best system is prepaid cards, and a payment system where the bus driver is NOT involved. You pay your fee, if you don't have exact change... too bad. I can't count how many times a bus is slowed down because of a rider who has a million questions, and then has to fiddle around with change... if you have a bunch of stops like that... you can really see why the bus is so late.

The PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS - instead of making public transport more affordable to all, they make it too expensive for the 'working poor'... a shame! I guess more people will be using cars now, well done...!...

Cleaniness - my bus stop in Banyo station has not been cleaned for weeks - it still has the same disgusting tissue papaers and other unidentified stuff stuck on the seats... for the price they charge to use the bus, surely they can afford cleaning the stops?

How does that work and I only get 30min breaks everyday except I work 9 hours and I'm standing all day so sitting in aircon for 5 hours then getting a 30min break is an privledge so why don't you all work together and stop being late it's pathetic how would youlike on your 30min break to order foodfrom somwhere an they take 27min to get your food to u so you have 3 min to eat? YourSouthsideDriver from Brisbane Southside says:

Ok, fair go... Im a driver and I do understand the issues you are all raising.
My wife works in retail with unreliable help, she is on her feet all day, often short or no breaks, but she now knows behind the scenes of bus driving and understands why i come home strung out & exhausted.
Yes, the prices have gone up... That is not Brisbane City Councils doing, that is Translink... Prices are up QLD wide.
As mentioned, drivers work to a RUN, which is the whole days work... Your 113 (or whichever route) runs late everyday because it is in a list of routes the driver has for that day (the run)... If the route before that runs late, the next route runs late, then the next one and so on.
The driver calls in when running late and it is logged... When all the runs are recalculated (every few months), timing allowances are made to give the driver catch up time so the next route can start on time... But give the guys behind the scene a fair go too... Imagine how complicated it is to organise thousands of buses and hundreds of routes.
Now, think of the driver... I hate driving a noisy, rattling 20 year old bus, but these machines cost $300,000au ATLEAST to buy new... Our council has to keep them running as long as possible. An average bus weighs 11 tonnes without any passengers... Full, it weighs about 16 tonnes - they do not stop quickly.
Add to that, they are the size of a truck... 2.5 meters wide. An average road lane is 3 meters wide, do the maths, not much room to spare.
Now, my day consists of keeping this vehicle on the road & not ploughing THROUGH the car that just cut in front of me... At the same time watching out for passengers waiting at my stops... Lets not mention noting my time for if im late OR early, which is worse... And still trying to keep a smile on my face & be helpfull to my passengers.
Its a mental chnallenge all day. There are some drivers out there it seems who couldnt care less... Its just a job... But most of us DO care, and empathise with the issues you face with the bus service.
All i can ask is that u try to understand the pressure that we are under to do our job... Getting you there on time, comfortably and safely.

Some Brisbane bus drivers are dangerous and incompetent. I saw a bus pull out today dangerously nearly hitting another car. I saw the bus driver. He wasnt even checking. I reckon there should be system, 3 complaints and youre out.

YourSouthsideDriver from Brisbane Southside says:

I agree... Some of our drivers shouldnt have a car licence let alone a HEAVY VEHICLE licence... I had a 4WD cut in front of me while driving to work... I followed the car into the depot carpark. I myself was shocked that a bus driver, a heavy vehicle driver, supposedly a professional driver, would drive a CAR in such a dangerous, uncourteous manner. I watch out for her out there in the bus these days too.
Let me say though, if a Brisbane Transport driver does get multiple complaints over a given issue, they are dealt with... If they persist ESPECIALLY in dangrous behavour, they will end up gone.
As a driver myself, I encourage that you DO call Brisbane Transport and REPORT dangerous behaviour of a driver... Plenty of courteous, careful drivers want the job. Less of the dangerous ones out there means a better day for you and me.
Also though, call up about the good ones too... Watch the driver and his or her behaviour, and note the good things that some of us do, not just the mistakes that that everyone could make. We are only human.
