Brisbane drivers are cutting petrol costs and carbon emissions with more than 30 per cent deliberately downsizing to a more fuel-efficient car, new research by NRMA Insurance has revealed*.
NRMA Insurance Queensland State Manager Brett Robinson said drivers aged 45 and over were the most likely in south-east Queensland to have bought a greener model.
| South-east Qld drivers with a more fuel-efficient car by age | 25-34 years 28% | 35-44 years 38% | 45-54 years 46% | 55+ 46% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South-east Qld drivers with a more fuel-efficient car by region | Sunshine Coast 52% | Gold Coast 47% | Brisbane 31% | SE QLD 40% |
“It’s probably easier for some drivers over 45 years to consider more compact cars with lower fuel consumption because they’re less likely to have to transport young families,” he said.
“But it’s encouraging to see drivers across all age groups choosing cars that are kinder on their hip pocket and the environment.”
Owners of fuel-efficient cars can also save on insurance, with NRMA Insurance receiving the gold award in the environment category of Money Magazine’s Best Socially Responsible Products for the savings it passes onto drivers of eco-friendly cars**.
However, Mr Robinson said it was easier for all new car buyers to consider the environment, thanks to the NRMA Insurance Greensafe Car Profiler.
NRMA Insurance has created an online tool that allows consumers to research and compare models on environmental impact and fuel economy, plus safety and security benefits.
“In short, it takes the hard work out of buying a new car,” Mr Robinson said.
The Greensafe Car Profiler can tell consumers how a model rates on annual fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions, plus repair costs, safety and security features, safety crash test results and more.
New-car shoppers looking for a model that’s right for them and the environment, can check out the one-stop shop for savvy car buyers.
NRMA Insurance is also offsetting one tonne of carbon emissions with every new comprehensive car insurance policy sold in Queensland before February 2008.
