Seniors may be proving they’re older and wiser at the wheel, with new research by NRMA Insurance revealing over 55s stress much less than others on the road.
According to an NRMA Insurance survey, one in four of those aged over 55 said they never stressed while behind the wheel^.
By contrast, the most stressed-out drivers were those in their mid 30s to mid 50s. Only one in nine said they didn’t stress while driving^.
NRMA Insurance spokesperson Frank Adler said those on the road should heed the older and wiser advice.
“Over 55s could be less stressed because of their driving experience, maturity or simply the fact that they have reached a more relaxing stage of life,” he said.
“And by this age, they have usually been driving for a number of years meaning the driving processes have become automatic and are less likely to lead to frustration.
“Our Queensland claims data also shows that compared to younger drivers, over 55s are less likely to have lodged car collision claims.”
advertisement Mr Adler said reducing stress prior to hitting the road could help drivers remain alert and avoid bingles.
“If you feel stressed or emotionally upset, you should try to postpone driving until you feel more at ease,” he said.
“And, if you start to feel stressed while on the road, perhaps because of heavy traffic or poor driving conditions, remind yourself to stay focused and in control.
“It takes just a split second of distraction for an accident to happen. So next time you’re feeling stressed behind the wheel, think back to what our elders would say - sit back, relax and just enjoy the ride.”
