Wabi Sabi is a Japanese philosophy that recognizes ‘beauty in imperfection’. It is also the name of the debut EP of Brisbane’s very own Kissy Trouble Company. The disc carries both blemished acoustic sounds juxtaposed against cleaner keyboard driven melodies; living up to its theme with beauty as it’s common thread.

“It’s kinda hard to mix something raw with something you want to produce…but I think it works,” enthuses singer-songwriter Chrissie Trabucco. “I think its special when someone makes a mistake so I didn’t want to cut that out of the recordings.”

Trabucco produced the CD in the lounge room of a West End house with collaborator Ben Vlad.

“He has some amazing ideas,” continues Chrissie, “and, even though we did fight like two roosters in a ring, I love him! When I couldn’t be bothered to get up off the floor and record, he’d set up a microphone over my head so I didn’t have to.”

She wrote 6 songs for this EP with the highlight being ‘The Muscle Song’

“We are about to make a film clip for it. It will involve lots of cakes and crockery and stuff getting smashed … or me learning to skate board.”

Trabucco’s blending of electro and live sounds has been with Chrissie since her beginnings as a musician.

“When my aunty gave me my first second hand keyboard, a Casio circa 1987, I started writing songs and would [eventually] play at The Verve on a Thursday night. I still play there.”

She draws inspiration from the likes of Yeo and The Fresh Goods, Tragic/Athletic, Big Strong Brute, Metric, Cat Power, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Bright Eyes, Billie Holiday. With a menagerie of artists stirring her it is no wonder Chrissie is able create such a fresh and unique sound.

On the pulse of Brisbane’s vibrant music scene Trabucco has been key in showcasing local bands at the upcoming Bris Indie Fest 2008.

“I’m not just excited about playing there [Bris Indie Fest], I co-organized it with Zac Gould, so I’m doubly excited! I think it’s great to support some of the amazing bands that are coming out of Brisbane, and I’m really proud to have the chance to play with them as well. It should be a fun way to spend your Saturday afternoon/night.”

Wabi Sabi out now.
