This suburban market takes over Blackwood Street once a month. The street’s cafes and stores stay open and must benefit from the increased numbers of people. The markets stalls are set up in a straight line so you can’t really lose shopping partners for long. It has a busy, family feel with prams, kids and dogs on leads all part of the crowd. There are definitely fewer trendy apartment dwellers than what you’ll see at the Powerhouse markets but Jan Power's Farmers Market at Mitchelton prove that quality food isn’t reserved for inner-city connoisseurs.

It was good to see local kids giving busking a go and the man selling heritage varieties of tomatoes was extremely friendly (with delicious tomatoes too!). It’s possible to have breakfast walking amongst the stalls, buying yoghurt, mushroom burgers or german sausages. The street’s cafés mean you can choose to sit down to eat too. There are many fruit and vegetables sellers to choose from but you can also buy seafood, local meat, flowers, herb seedlings, handmade crafts and skincare.

These markets would be easy to navigate with a wheelchair or a stroller. It was great to see people take over the car’s domain for just a morning, although a little more shade could be welcome on hot days. It’s a real boon for the community of Mitchelton and surrounds and a market that’s worth writing in the calendar.

I am loving the Mitchelton Farmers Markets!! Living locally, they are a practical way to replenish the fridge and pantry early on a Sunday morning. The fresh produce is amazing and lasts for ages. Please Jan, don't ever take the markets away from Blackwood St, my neighbours and I plus all the other locals and monthly visitors would miss it way too much! I will continue to support the markets every month :) I totally recommend the fresh herbs for sale, they keep growing for ages and are vibrant and fresh, the seafood, fruit and vegies, pastas made while you wait, indian curries, german meats and the Swiss cheeses....hey I think I would recommend just about anything for sale there! Fantastic, yes we in the less trendy suburbs do have a decent farmers market. The produce is superb, reasonably priced and the market has a great community feel about it.
Can it be more than once a month? Please!
