Our review

Although he is widely considered to be a monster in the Western world, Genghis Khan remains one of the greatest leaders ever. He managed to conquer more territory than anyone and established one of the largest empires in history. This is a movie about his early life - the years before he became the famous Genghis Khan, when he was still a young Mongol called Temudjin.

"Mongol" is a stunning film that makes great use of the natural beauty of the Mongolian landscape. Directed by acclaimed Russian director Sergei Bodrov, it was filmed over summer, autumn, and winter on location in some of the most remote parts of the world.

It is also a love story. At the age of nine, Temudjin chose a wife from a neighbouring clan and was devoted to her through all the hardships he endured. He fought for her at a time when Mongols did not make "war over a woman". Why bother, when you could easily get yourself a new one?

The love story comes as a surprise as it's believed that Genghis Khan was a ruthless and evil leader, whereas this movie paints the opposite. It humanises Temudjin and goes some way to explain why he became what he grew up to be, and why he wanted to unite his people - a Mongolian "Braveheart", so to speak.

It is an amazing film with a solid cast and excellent production values. While there are several battle sequences rife with gore and blood, they do not make up the bulk of the story. It is after all about a young boy who grows into a powerful leader and the trials and tribulations he experiences along the way.

And it is definitely a must-see.

8/10
