Our review
If there was a search for the most politically incorrect movie this year, "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" would take the crown. Although this hilarious comedy will no doubt offend some viewers, if you're a fan of Adam Sandler's humour this film is one of his funniest to date.
Written by Sandler with Robert Smigel and Judd Apatow, it centres on elite Israeli commando Zohan (Sandler), who fakes his own death to pursue his dream of working as a hairstylist for the Paul Mitchell salon in New York.
However, when Zohan (or Scrappy Coco as he renames himself) is uncouthly rejected by Paul Mitchell, he finds a job working in a Brooklyn salon run by Palestinian babe Dalia (Canadian Emmanuelle Chriqui). There he sets off on his mission to make the whole world "silky smooth" by offering more than just a cut, wash, and blow dry - and falling in love with sexy Dalia in the process.
From his Middle Eastern accent (one of the best accents to hit the big screen since Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat) to his groin-thrusting random disco moves, Sandler's performance is hilarious and very entertaining. John Turturro is brilliant as Zohan's Palestinian nemesis "The Phantom", while Rob Schneider convincingly plays a Middle Eastern New York taxi driver who sets out to get Zohan in retaliation for the theft of his beloved goat.
Random cameo appearances from Mariah Carey, Dave Matthews, John McEnroe, Chris Rock and Kevin James add to the already colourful mix of randomness in this film.
"You Don't Mess With the Zohan" is like a modern day "Romeo and Juliet" or "West Side Story" set amidst the Middle East crisis - but in the middle of Brooklyn.
It's a story of forbidden love, tolerance and living together, but with a mix of crazy off-the-wall humour, lots of penis jokes, comical accents, slapstick, ridiculous outfits and lots and lots of hummus!
If you're a fan of Adam Sandler's juvenile humour and are in the mood for some true silliness, then "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" is the movie for you... "Disco, disco! Good! Good!"
