For ‘Contemporary Australia: Optimism’, the Children’s Art Centre presents interactive art works and projects created by a number of exhibiting artists especially for children and families. Spanning both levels of the Children’s Art Centre at GoMA and beyond, the projects encourage children to explore and discover the fresh and imaginative ways that Australian artists consider the world.

Gemma Smith ‘Constructive activity for children’

Artist Gemma Smith shares her fascination with colour, shape and construction in this large-scale interactive installation.

Sean Cordeiro & Claire Healy ‘Rock the house’

Artists Sean Cordeiro and Claire Healy set a creative challenge for children to re-create miniature versions of their own home or dream home.

Michael Leunig ‘Story’

Cartoonist, artist and philosophical thinker Michael Leunig engages young hearts and minds with his large-scale installed painting exploring optimistic thoughts and stories especially for kids.

Robert MacPherson ‘The swamp rats drawing project’

Robert MacPherson’s drawing project encourages children to use their imaginations to draw pictures from the language signs of his Mayfair: (Swamp rats) series.

Gabrielle De Vietri ‘Just add hope!’

This computer touch screen activity based on text from self-help books, daily horoscopes and philosophical thoughts features the artist’s choice of phrases relating to the themes of optimism. Play online at www.qag.qld.gov.au/optimism_kids.

Emily Floyd ‘Make a manifesto’

In a garden setting, children are invited to write their own manifesto and employ permaculture practices to create paper mulch from the manifestos and germinate new life.

Thomas Meadowcroft ‘Walk the car’

A large-scale sound theatre introduces children to the composer Thomas Meadowcroft’s experimental approach to music.

Arlene TextaQueen ‘Rides with the brides’

Drawing with artist Arlene TextaQueen is on the menu at the Gallery of Modern Art’s River cafe and Foyer cafe.

Michael Zavros ‘Studioland’

Featuring fascinating displays of natural curiosities in decorated cabinets, children are invited to observe, explore and make their own studio drawings on ‘gold-framed’ templates.

Tony Albert ‘Alien nation embassy’

This multimedia installation features highly engaging elements including a population counter, video footage of the artist with the aliens and their own electronic swipe cards for all participants to access secret alien information.

Kathy Temin ‘Arrange your own trees’

Children are invited to create their own fuzzy felt landscapes by arranging white felt trees against blue felt skies to make peaceful places for young minds to imagine and feel at home in.

Location

The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is just a short walk across the Victoria Bridge from the Brisbane CBD. GoMA and the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) are located within easy walking distance of each other (150m apart), with entrances to both on Stanley Place. They are part of the Cultural Centre, close to the city centre and South Bank Parklands.

Free, except for special exhibitions and some Cinematheque programs.

Parking

Paid parking is available at the following local car parks:
  • Queensland Art Gallery/Queensland Museum Car park — enter from Grey Street or the Cultual Centre tunnel.
  • Stanley Place Car park — enter from the Cultural Centre tunnel or Stanley Place.
  • Queensland Performing Arts Centre Car park — enter from the Cultural Centre tunnel.

Public transport

Bus: Alight at the Cultural Centre Busway in Melbourne Street. Chartered bus temporary set-down in Stanley Place.

Train: Alight at South Brisbane Station, corner of Melbourne and Grey Streets.

CityCat and Ferry: The CityCat and City Ferry terminals are located at South Bank 1 CityCate terminal.

Taxi: Set-down is available in Stanley Place, from Grey Street (both directions) and the Cultural Centre Tunnel. A Yellow Cab taxi phone is located in the foyers of both QAG and GoMA.

Accessibility

Mobility impaired and wheelchair access is available to both the QAG and GoMA. GoMA wheelchair access is via the Street Level entrance on Stanley Place or via the lift from the Stanley Place car park.

Cloakroom

Minimal baggage should be taken into gallery spaces. Essential items are permitted, however, all umbrellas, backpacks and large bags should be checked into the cloakroom.

Gallery dining

The River Cafe is a self-service cafeteria on the Park Level of GoMA and offers a variety of hot and cold meal options, all with an emphasis on freshness, fast service and healthy options for family or group dining. The outdoor seating area overlooks the Brisbane River.

Opening hours: Mon & Tue 10am - 4pm, Wed to Sun 7am to 4pm.

The Foyer Cafe on Level 2 of GoMA overlooks the Kurilpa reach of the Brisbane River with stunning views to Mount Coot-tha. This licensed cafe offers table service and a modern menu based around fresh, seasonal produce.

Opening hours: Mon to Fri 10am - 4pm, Sat & Sun 9am - 4pm.
