La traviata
Giuseppe Verdi’s eternally popular opera La traviata boasts some of the most magnificent arias and choruses in the repertoire. Set in glittering Paris in the 1870s, Elijah Moshinsky’s lushly romantic production is a visual feast and the perfect complement to the composer’s celebrated score.
Violetta Valéry is a famous Parisian courtesan who abandons her promiscuous lifestyle after falling in love with a young nobleman, Alfredo Germont, who has long adored her from afar. But her happiness is short-lived, when Alfredo’s father arrives at her home and insists that she end the relationship with his son. Even though it breaks her heart, Violetta succumbs to his demands and leaves Alfredo, forsaking love to salvage the Germont family’s honour.
Audiences will be treated to a vocal tour de force when Russian soprano Elvira Fatykhova (who won hearts in Lucia di Lammermoor and The Barber of Seville) returns to Brisbane to perform the role of Violetta, a role which she has made her own. She will be joined by tenor Adrian Dwyer as Alfredo and baritone Douglas McNicol as Giorgio Germont.
We are delighted that Maestro Peter Robinson has agreed to step in to replace Richard Bonynge who has had to withdraw for health reasons.
