Maestro 6 - Bach, Berg & Brahms
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Orchestral Suites demonstrate his genius at writing brilliant and virtuosic music for a festive occasion.
The Second Suite features a prominent solo role for the flute. Alban Berg incorporated the chorale “Es ist genug!” (It is enough!) from Bach’s Cantata BWV 60, as a theme in his Violin Concerto.
To the Memory of an Angel was dedicated to Manon Gropius who died young, the daughter of Gustav Mahler’s widow, Alma and second husband Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius. Although firmly anchored in twentieth century style, its radiance and haunting beauty have earned it a place in the canon of great romantic concertos.
Brahms’ Fourth Symphony marked the glorious culmination of his symphonic writing and in this symphony looks back to the contrapuntal writing of Bach by incorporating a passacaglia as the base for his magnificent last movement.
