Maestro 9 - Dvorak's Cello Concerto

Swiss-Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta has earned lavish plaudits for her phenomenal technical prowess but here in Dvorak’s majestic masterpiece, the most well known of all cello concertos, we will witness this young musician’s ability to convey expressive nuances of tone-colour and emotion.

Even by the prodigious standards of Richard Strauss’ musical imagination, An Alpine Symphony is a truly heaven-storming work. The very sight of the vast orchestra required for this perilous alpine journey, with its impressive battery of brass instruments gleaming under the spotlights, is enough to set pulses racing, even before the conductor’s baton has been raised. Symphonic music is rarely more monumental in scale than this astonishingly vivid description of a day wandering in the Alps near Richard Strauss’ home in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Southern Bavaria.
