Freddy Kempf makes a welcome return to Brisbane to demonstrate yet again why he’s the pianist whose every appearance has audiences leaping to their feet and critics searching for new superlatives.

To mark the 80th birthday of celebrated Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe we present one of his pioneering compositions for orchestra and didjeridu Earth Cry. After almost 150 years, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is still the ultimate bravura showpiece. Some of the more conservative among the jaded Parisian sophisticates at the premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in 1913 rioted at the barbaric rhythms and ferocious orchestral sounds. Now that Sacre has long been admitted to the Pantheon of virtuoso showpieces, audiences take the knife-edged precision and searing ensemble which are essential for this work for granted and actually look forward to being shocked by these musical pictures of pagan Russia.
